Scenically situated on the top of a mountain in wooded northern Hamamatsu, this castle has a very secluded, rustic feel to it. You have a hike about a half an hour through the woods to the site (the hike isn't strenuous, but you should be in a decent condition to do it), and the view of the town of Misakubo below is definitely worth it.

The castle lacks the grandeur of other recreations (even Hamamatsu castle downtown), but that makes it feel special. There are a few signs in English detailing its history as a citadel, helpful for someone with little knowledge of the area. I took a little less than ten minutes to scope out the place, but I spent a good deal more time checking out the view.

As a side note, there is also a kids' playground nearby, located on the downslope of a steep hill. A little freaky, but I'm not six years old, and should not be one to judge.

Overall, I wouldn't make a special trip to this castle if you're on a short trip, but if you're in the Hamamatsu area for a while, it's a beautiful and unusual detour.

The rebuilt castle of Takane offers visitors the chance to get an idea of what old time castle life might have been like. The views of Misakubo aren't bad either. Are you waiting for the next train on the Iida Line? Here's the best way to pass the time
