It is one of the largest tourist limestone caves in the Tokai region, which was formed in a limestone area 250 million years ago. The average temperature inside the cave is 18 degrees Celsius, you can enjoy a comfortable space that is cool in summer and warm in winter. Homemade gelato is also recommended! This was a wonderful experience - around 600 metres walking through this cavern full of stalactites and stalagmites, a spectacular underground waterfall - all beautifully illuminated and with gentle music to match. Its ok for the handicapped too with the walking track smooth and easy to negotiate - but do watch your heads!
A thirsty minute bus ride from the city centre.

This was my first time exploring a cave and it was fun! Great for the family! It had hills and areas that was cool to maneuver through! The walk is not that long so it is great for any age!

Easy drive from Hamamatsu with easy parking. On a hot day the cool cave is a real treat. The route through the cave was well lit and at many points information was given about the rock formation.

The cave is big, but the part open to casual visitors is not too big. The cave is mostly accessible, easy to explore, and offers nice views of different formations, explanations of its discovery, history and uses. It is ideal for families as there are small entertainment things and many toys, etc. around. I would also recommend it to anyone who likes caves, who hasn't been to a cave yet, and who lives in Hamamatsu or stays here for a bit longer. If you are only here for 1-2 days there are maybe more exciting things to see, but if you stay here for a bit longer it is worth a visit.

I liked this cave even though its not that large but they made the cave accessible and easy to view by the tourists. I did not feel tired in entering the cave, no need to crawl and it was a very comfortable walk while seeing the wonders of nature underground. The temperature is colder than outside the cave and you can experience coldness of fresh water dripping.

After reading many positive reviews, I had higher expectations and hence was disappointed. The cave was rather small, basically a narrow tunnel. We spent less than 40 minutes inside the tunnel.
The passageway was well lighted though slippery due to the constant water dripping through the ceiling. Strongly advised to wear a good pair of shoes. There were the usual stalactites and stalagmites, with some interesting formations and creative names. The highlight is the small waterfall of 30 metres inside the cave.
Given a 1 hour journey and 1000 yen entrance fee, I suggest you give it a miss if you have been to other caves. Visit if you have half a day to spare or you have seen enough of castle, park and shoppings.
Getting there - At Hamamatsu bus terminal next to train station, go to bus stop 15 and take bus number 45. Alight at Ryugashido-Iriguchi, journey about 1 hour. Look out for sign and walk for about 10 minutes. Note the bus is not regular. See my photos for bus schedules (note weekday or weekend).

Really didn't know what to expect before arriving. This was my first Cave exploration in any country so it was pretty cool. The water fall was the best sight, the formation was the probably the next best. Spent about 3 hours at this sight. Good for ages 10 to ?? Make sure you have good mobility for this sight, some spots are tight & slick.

This was definitely one of the best highlights of my trip. The cavern was very easy to walk through and beautifully lit, showcasing many of the natural, ancient formations and had many creative names for the structures too, which made it extra fun.The waterfall was very interesting, and larger than I thought. Plus, the bats added to the "explorer" experience (though they surprised me)!! It might be nice to have some more English information about how the different kinds of stalactites, stalagmites, etc. were formed, since I was quite curious, but while the museum at the end of the walk-through only had Japanese explanations, you can understand the gist of it from the detailed pictures and diagrams. There is also a pamphlet/guide with English information, though, and the story of how the current owner's grandfather and father discovered & dug out the cave is quite awe-inspiring. Finally -- I can't remember if it was just a winter special or not, but the illuminated cave outside [free admission] was also absolutely amazing - such a surprise! It was just like something out of a dream! I could have spent ages here at the Ryugashido Cavern!!
