We just went this spring, was alot of fun...digging in the dirt, making new friends and discovering stones. We had a great time. We brought a change of clothes (you'll need it) we brought a picnic lunch and ate there (no where really around that community to grab food really so I recommend packing). We brought out own bucket and... More

This mine is not open to the public and is limited in group or school visits. I had the privilege to take the kids yesterday. The weather was beautiful and we found about 30+pounds of beautiful stones, gems, minerals. As stated in the previous review, Sam (the owner) did a fresh dump of mined earth and it caused a big... We called a week ahead and they said our family with two kids could tour the mine as long as we arrived early enough to attend the mine safety briefing. After we got there the owners said that we could not go in the mine even though they were giving tours to several college groups that day. We then went... More

We had the sorry disappointment of showing up on a summer Saturday, after driving 2 hours, to find the mine "Closed for the Season." What, pray tell, is the season for sluicing rocks? Winter? At the very least, the website should have included operating dates.

This was our first gem mining experience and I must say I was pleasantly surprized. We arrived mid morning and were greeted by a very pleasant and knowledgable lady in the gift shop. She explained the layout and gave us some tips for a more fruitfull experience. There are multiple ways to find the gems from digging up the surrounding... More

Even though it had rained the day of the trip the kids were still give the same attention as if it had been a sunny 85 degree day. The staff as small as it is catered to the needs and questions providing help to any and all.

The Dunaways, who own the mine, are great people. The mine exploits a pegmatite which produces a number of minerals, including gem grade amazonite.

I've had the pleasure of visiting Morefield Mine on several occasions. Tucked away in quiet Amelia County, you begin your adventure by entering a small store that displays various gems, fossils and the like that have been found at the mine. Amazonlite, Beryl, Garnet, Black Tourmaline and Mica are a few of the stones native to this area. You have... More
