This is now a private home and no longer a museum. You can stand outside and read the historical marker. Very sad, as it was once a lovely museum.

Cant view since it is a private home. Better to visit his birthplace or go to Arlington Cemetery in Washington DC

Definitely make the stop here and read the commemorative plaques about the home. It's not longer a museum, but it's a cool place to stop and find out more about our history!

History is more fascinating than fiction. Robert E. Lee grew up next door to abolitionist Dr. Benjamin Hallowell who was Lee's mentor, tutor, and father figure -- in the absence of a real father. Lee got his anti-slavery views from Dr. Hallowell, and Dr. Hallowell also prepared Lee academically for his entry into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Lee married a wealthy daughter of George Washington's adopted son, even though the Lees were of meager means themselves. History really is more interesting than Hollywood. You can learn facts like this from the history guides at "Alexandria's Footsteps to the Past" -- the most scholarly history tour company in the D.C. region.

I googled a walking tour of Alexandria and this was on it. Cool to see it and I usually don't think of Lee frequenting the same spots as Washington, Jefferson and Adams. There is a family home across the street that you can go in and has some family papers. It was closed early but we got to enjoy the gardens in the back.
If you stop at the visitors center you can get a pass for free parking for the day. Nice!

This used to be a worthwhile visit, and it is still of historic interest, but as it is a private home now you can only glimpse the exterior. The private sale created an uproar at the time, many years ago, but not enough money could be raised to save it as a museum for the public.

Too bad this is no longer a museum, but there is still an historic marker outside, and what can be seen from the street is quite lovely. Close to the Lee-Fendall House, a bit off of King Street, worth a walk over just to see it.

The home is stunning and is located very near the center of Old Town. However, the site was recently listed for sale and may no longer be open to the public

Was walking around Old Towne Alexandria to get a feel of the place and came across the sign indicating I was standing in front of Robert E Lee's boyhood home. The place has had visits by Washington and Lafayette and was the home of Lightfoot Harry Lee (Robert's father and Revolutionary War hero). The house is in private hands and not open to the public. It is a short walk from here to Wolfe Street where the school Robert E Lee attended is sitting next to the Little Theatre of Alexandria and is occasionally open when classes are held inside. Shame the historical society which owned the home were unable to maintain it.

You can drive by this house or see it from the sidewalk, but it is private property now so you cannot enter.
