Was there once in the late 70"s when I was a teenager and received a 2 dollar tour from Lao Russell. I remember how grand the place looked with beautiful gardens out back complete with marble and granite statues working fountains. So me and my...More

Checked website to make sure it was open. Drove from Richmond only to find it was closed. A young lady yelling out the car window informed us, I suppose someone had not updated the site. It is closed some weekends in September as well. Swannanoa...More

Used to be fun, but the "tour" now only includes a small handful of ground-floor rooms. Stay away! The owner was rude when I expressed my displeasure and asked for my money back.

If you are an architectural historian, you will appreciate this place and it's history. It's a little tricky to get to, but so worth the find. The house is amazing even though it is falling in disrepair. I went when they weren't offering tours of...More

Spectacular residence. I loved the views from the tower room. Glad to know some work has been done to restore it but the building and grounds need lots more.

If you love old houses, this is well worth a short drive from the Staunton, VA area to view the exterior of this lovely old gem. Having visited Maymont, a gorgeous plantation outside Richmond which was built by the wealthy Dooley family who built Swannanoa,...More

Although this "villa" is in disrepair, please understand that the owners (who are up there in age) are using their personal money to try and restore this magnificent building. We toured the house with the owner, Mrs Dulaney. and learned the history from beginning to...More

I would not say this is a palace, more like a manor. Not very visitor friendly with No Trespassing signs posted every where. Our Inn hosts said it was okay to visit, but it was not welcoming.

There is not a real welcoming feel to the place. There are alot of No trespassing signs posted everywhere. Our innkeepers said we could visit the property, but frankly it was kind of creepy.
