We had lunch on South Congress and spent about 90 minutes just eating great pizza and chatting with a friend. Then we walked around and spent over an hour just wandering through the shops. I am not a huge shopper, but enjoy browsing at unusual things. I only made one purchase, but really enjoyed just taking a look in the... More

Loaded with restaurants and fun shops, it should be part of your itinerary while visiting Austin. I don't get that crazy wall that says "I love you" or something like that. We almost slammed into a group of girls who stopped suddenly to take pictures standing in front of it. There are plenty of places to stop and eat, look... More

everyone should experience south congress, once a run down part of the city, now an exciting and vibrant part of the city. Easy to walk and shop

Yes, we visited South Congress as tourists. As has the rest of the city, SoCo has changed rapidly over the past few years. I remember when there were no high rises in Austin. South Congress was laid back. It is eclectic with lost of energy and variety of restaurants. However, congested, overpriced, and exhausting. One time is enough.

read about this place on Trip Advisor and decided to walk around during lunch time. It was a mile long parade of quirkiness. Lots of shops with weird items for sale and a host of food choices and little shops to keep you busy and entertained. It is not flat and during the hot days you can break it up... More

This is one of the best walking neighborhoods in Austin. There are interesting shops and restaurants up and down both sides of the street. Most of the rest of the city is a ghost town most of the time. Make sure you hit Allen's Western Wear and you can skip the famous Amy's Ice Cream lines.

This was a great area and I really enjoyed browsing the shops. One word of advice-DON'T GO TO EARLY. Most of the shops don't open until 11:00 am. That's really part of the vibe and part of what makes it unique, but let's get out of bed and get going Austin! Sure wish I had known that so I could... More

While staying at Hotel San Jose we were always "walking the street" along with every dog in town. No pedigrees here, they look like they all came from the shelter - yeah Austin. Every time I would walk I would find something new - the Italian place at the very end with the great pastries, the weird shop with the... More

South Congress lacks the polish of Congress north of the Colorado and some of the downtown shopping districts. What makes it is the collection of eclectic stores, cafes, restaurants and food truck. Here you will find a genuine country western wear store (Allens Boots), one of Austin's most storied rock and roll clubs (The Continental), funky accommodations (Hotel San Jose)... More

Was this area supposed to be weird? Because it wasn't for us. Perhaps because we've grown up in a city (Vancouver) that has had funky areas since the 60's. It was interesting, however. A very nice array of stores from antiques to books to souvenirs to clothing. All price ranges.
