I'm not a bat person, but the kids really wanted to check this out and I'm so glad we did. It was fun and not something you see everyday. If you don't want to stand on the bridge near traffic go sit in the grass across the street from the yeti store. There were ice cream vendors so parents be... More

I love bats so this was a definite must on our list of things to see during a 1 month driving trip. I was not disappointed. You just stand and stare thinking a variety of thoughts... Man those things are fast!... How do that many bats hide in all those little cracks?... Wow, they just seem to keep coming and... More

For all of you who are squeamish about bats, have no fear. Bats are INCREDIBLE creatures who serve an important purpose in the health and well-being of any ecosystem, consuming large quantities of mosquitoes and other harmful insects each night. Austin has the largest population of bats in North America, and what a sight it was to see them all... More

Road trip to Austin we stayed at the Embassy suites on S. Congress it is a walking distance from this Bridge. I recommend getting there 30 minutes before sunset you might be waiting a good 20-30 minutes before you see the bats. But kids enjoyed it. My boys age range is from 14-7. Younger than 5 would probably not enjoy... More

This was on my bucket list and worth the wait. I took a cruise but really, the same view can be had from the bridge for free. Go for it!

We went in Feb so there weren't as many as they probably are now but it was still pretty fun and cool to see the hundreds or so coming out of the bridge. first it looked like bunch of birds until realized those are bats! yes, head there sunset time or before to get a spot on the bridge. There... More

Just after the sun goes down, millions of bats swarm out to go eat dinner! Boats are circling below filled with tourists, people on canoes, etc. But if you go onto the Congress Ave. Bridge, you can see them for free. It's like a cultural thing that you just have to do while you're in Austin. Every night - you'll... More

Like any wildlife viewing, the experience is at the mercy of Mother Nature. They're seasonal, mostly March to November, when 750,000 pregnant females migrate back from Mexico. Once the babies take flight around early August, they're 1.5 million bats strong. The cloud of bats launches toward the east around sunset, mostly from the southern half of the bridge. Depending on... More

Unique in design & very cool to know it's home to so many bats (ie if you're a bat person). Even during the day it looks great (and bats are nocturnal so they'll be sleeping under here).
