Congress Bridge has a HUGE bat colony that lives underneath and it is a breathtaking sight to see them fly off at dusk. The best time to see them is in October!

Unfortunately as it is usually the case, this tradition has attracted too many spectators and so being able to witness the bats in all their flying splendor can be a great moment or a flop. Last couple of times it was disappointing even when we switched to different location. All in all is worth the try but have a plan... More

Love watching the bats "swarm ". Really a neat thing to see. A must do in Austin! Follow with ice cream at Amy's.

We were told that we would not see many bats given the season but we wanted to take the chance anyway. We walked over the bridge and found a viewing spot below along the river just before dusk. We waited and waited while crowds were gathering and then it happened--thousand of bats darted from under the bridge in one direction.... More

I had to go and see what the free tail bats are. Well, I couldn't really see one close, but I saw a whole family (a big family!) flying by. Truly unforgettable experience. You get a good view from the Congress Ave bridge, however, it is a completely different experience if you view them from the Lady Bird Lake. There... More

In the summer months, this event has to be on your "must do" list. There are many ways to view the emerging bats from bringing a blanket and sitting on the banks of Lady Bird Lake to taking a "Bat Cruise" and watching them from the water. It is truly a sight to see.

If you're around in August take an afternoon to see the bats come out from under the bridge and waft like smoke downstream. Get there early, don't be in a rush, bring the kids.

I've been here to see this several times and each time I'm in awe. This is definitely a Must-see experience like none other! I've always had to park and walk. However, it's always been a simple stroll. Try to be there about an hour before sunset to find a spot. I typically bring a blanket and sit near the water... More

This was fantastic. I love here and still go occasionally because it's pretty amazing. Make sure you check the website in advance to get an idea as to when they'll email coming out as several times of the year they really only come out after dark which limits the experience but if you time it right it's really a unique... Good day visitors! If you are looking for an amazing view of the biggest colonies of bats in the USA, you just found it. Many visitors hear about the bats and they end up spending time under the bridge to see the bats come out. Word to the wise, the pungent guano smell may keep you away. It is a... More
