Just outside of Athens, Texas is Lake Athens. Not just a local water supply. This beautiful little lake has a great marina and on site restaurant. Bass tournaments on Tuesday fill the lake with seasoned fishermen searching for the big one. Boat launch right next to the marina. Ski boats, jet skis and tubing are all welcome here. Boaters enjoy swimming at the beach-like docking area by the damn. And don’t forget the Texas State Fish Hatchery, a must visit for all ages.

Very nice place to go kayaking. I have traveled here several times for kayaking and photo shoots and I find that this is a place where I can find some peace and quite. I have even gone out in the kayak and brought a good book. There is some good fishing here also. There is more that enough to do here.

Water was a bit low, however still enjoyed boating on the lake.
not too crowded, people are very friendly and want to help you find a good fishing spot. Talked to a lot of people.

This lake is one of the best little bass fishing lakes in Texas. In fact, not only is the bass fishing good, but crappie, white bass, catfish and carp are all good year round. I've been fishing Lake Athens for most of my life and I can truly say it's the best lake in Texas! My biggest bass so far is a 13.76 pounder. It was caught in Dec 2013 and was entered into the Toyota Sharelunker program. Very good vegetation, plenty of boat docks. Lake Athens is also very safe and easy to navigate and has 3 ramps. Great place to bring the kids fishing and the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center is right next to the lake.

Lake Athens is small - somewhere near 1800 acres but offers a lot of opportunity for fun on the water. It's clear spring-fed waters are usually calm and lend themselves to great fishing as well as water skiing and wake boarding. The lake gets a little crowded on holiday weekends but during the week it is pleasantly quiet. Lake Athens offers one launch ramp at the west end of the lake, near the Texas Freshwater Fisheries. Fuel is available and the Marina (although there isn't one) Restaurant has some of the best fried catfish around.

Lake Athens is a beautiful small lake east of the city of Athens, Texas. The size of the lake and limited public boat ramp only add to the beauty as it limits boat traffic.

I go there about every weekend. The lake is beautiful and there is so much to do. I just can’t help but wonder why my grandparents property is the second picture?

I am not aware of any rent houses around Lake Athens, you might try VRBO to see if there are any listings! I know there are several around Cedar Creek Lake and Lake Palestine and Lake Fork

You can swim there, but there is not a beach area. You must swim off the pier.
