Every library is different so save time by asking for assistance in navigating the publications. If you tell them what you are looking for, they will lead you to specific pubs. The library is located in a building that also has museums and books for sale. Parking is free behind the building. We used a coupon and got $1 off the entrance fee (we paid $5 each). You can use a laptop but bags and purses are to be stored in lockers (free). There was no time limit on how long we could use the library. No scanners or photos are allowed and it was 55 cents for a photocopy. I didn't have enough time to research everything I would have liked, but did find the one thing I hoped to get from the trip! (death date and burial location of an ancestor). That meant another road trip to a cemetery where we found several ancestors - and it was not a cemetery we would have looked in without first going to LCHC.

This building houses much history of Lehigh county and has interesting temporary exhibits at times--baseball is the area, Lincoln artifacts, presidental history, etc. It is run by the Historical Society and is on the same property as the historic Trout Hall built in 1770.

A low-key museum but very interesting collections. No crowds. You can learn a lot about history of the area. Parking in the back.

Good local permanent exhibits and check to see what exhibits are on short term. Good professional speakers do present programs at this museum. I usually visit once or twice a year.

My husband and I spent a couple of hours here on a cold afternoon. It is a lovely building and there is a lot to see and take in. The history of the Lehigh Valley is rich and interesting. I learned a great deal about the culture of my home. I especially enjoyed the parts dealing with the first woman ever to be made a brigadier general, a woman from Allentown. She actually passed away the day after we saw the exhibit. There is also a good section on the Lenni Lenape Indians and some great used books for sale.

Went here today--a rainy Friday in January--and we were the only patrons in the place. Must be frustrating to the staff because the exhibits are excellent--Presidents, local history, a restored Rolls, and a special exhibit on Palmerton, historical home of New Jersey Zinc Company. Well worth your time.

I have been doing some genealogy and wanted to visit this museum to see the history of the pre-revolutionary period due to my family having been in the Lehigh Valley area. First of all we had a difficult time finding a place to park. Signage was not helpful in letting us know to park at the curb.I had a limited time to spend in the museum and the entry fee was $8. I went up to the exhibit area and found no lights on nor did I see a way to turn them on. After wandering around in the exhibit, I went out to let the docent at the desk know that I couldn't see. I ran into the director who turned the lights on for me telling me the the volunteer docent didn't know that the lights were off in an energy conservation mode. The exhibit did answer some of my questions. As I emerged from the exhibit, I heard a conversation downstairs that seemed to be spirited. The director got into a conversation about the civil war and current attitudes in the south. We live in Tennessee so when the director started making some judgmental comments about statues being removed, etc we felt that judgments being made were unfair. It made us feel uncomfortable. It seemed odd that a person who should be interested in showing an unbiased view of history should be so slanted in their personal views.

This museum does a beautiful job of presenting local Lehigh Valley history. Prior to coming here we had no idea this community had huge silk mills and was known for cigar making.
The temporary exhibit on Presidents is very timely and puts controversy in perspective.
The employees at the museum are very proud of this museum and their enthusiasm radiates!
Wish more visitors would discover and enjoy this treasure. The entrance fee is very reasonable and it makes a lovely afternoon visit regardless of the season .
Only complaint is that they didn't make it clear on the website that the mansion/historic home on the grounds does not do tours in the winter. Website indicated the Trout Hall would be open so we were very excited about touring the 1700s home. Will have to come back in warmer season for that experience.
Also I suggest they find a better way to market that house. If they described it as Penn Summer Mansion it would attract many more visitors than calling it Trout Hall. It is not a"fish hatchery ". It is a beautiful stately home from the Penn family that served a key roll in Revolutionary era. Amazing that this historic gem sits right in the middle of downtown Allentown!

Our family is from the Weisenberg and Low Hill Townships in Leigh County. They settles here in the late 18th century and left in the early 19th Century. We have been doing research for nearly 40 years on the family. There were some missing pieces so we stopped here to see if we could find anything new. We explained why we were there and what information we were looking for. They were extremely helpful and we were able to find a significant amount of information. Most of the information confirmed what we found on line and we also found some new data. The information on line doesn't always record all information available on a record so it was really nice to see some of the original documents or even early translations, most are in German. One of the librarians was even to help with the translation of some of the documents. We also had time to go through the museum on local history. The guide was again extremely helpful and we learned a lot about early life in Leigh County and got an appreciation of what our ancestors may have found here. While not a lot of history here, if you are form the area or visiting because you have a connection, you do get a great deal. We didn't haver any children with us on this trip but someday I hope to visit with my grandchildren. There are lots of artifacts to see, and it will give them a good appreciation of their heritage. If you like local history and background on the area this is a good place to start. My wife was more into it than I was and her rating would be higher. There is an historical building on site that we wanted to see but it was not open that day which was disapointing.
