A brilliant museum run by very enthusiastic volunteers. The volunteers really bring the story of the carousel to life and clearly have a pride in what they have done so far. I recommend doing the 'downstairs' tour to see the restoration work in progress as well as the history of the journey so far.
Of course the carousel is a must ride for young and old alike and they have made some good accessibility adaptations for those requiring seated options and ease of getting onto the carousel.

Riding a turn of the century carousel with lovingly carved animals is a treat for all ages. One can even still try to grab rings as you whirl around. Almost all staff are volunteers and all we met were unfailingly friendly and helpful. Learning how the animals are made made me appreciate the carousel even more. Thousands of hours of work go into each animal. All animals are sponsored by individual donos with personalized details! Such fun!

What a sweet, charming, downtown and the highlight is the historic carousel! Started with a great lunch at Gamberetti's Italian restaurant and a walk along the river. Great local boutiques and a surprisingly classy men's shop. The Natty Dresser. Can't wait to see how the river front park develops. Could use a hotel, spa and some wine tasting rooms downtown!

The Albany carousel is an all volunteer effort involving 300 carvers, painters and support personnel. 45 Carvers are working on 58 exquisite animals for this marvelous project. The carvings will be among the best in the country, following in the footsteps of one of the early 19th century carvers. To see this is to put a grin on your face and a lump in your stomach with awe.

We came here with family as we visited from out of town. All of the animals are hand carved and stunning. We had such a fun time reading about each one and had a hard time choosing which one to ride. We got here a half hour before close, so we didn't get to visit downstairs. We will be coming back again next time we are in town.

I saw this 10 years ago when the work was just beginning. The contrast between the old 'warehouse" with plastic over the leaking roof and the new beautifully designed workshop and carousel house is fantastic. Its all been built by private donations and volunteer work. The museum contains some of the original figures from the 1800's. There's a carving workshop where the new figures are being carved by hand, no electrical tools involved. Then the painting workshop where the figures are painted using layers auto paint and clear coat for durability. The gift shop has everything carousel. The centerpiece, of course is the carousel itself. A work in progress, each piece is a work of art with details decided by the sponsor. The museum itself is free with guided tours by local volunteers. Cost to ride this beautiful carousel is $2. Will definitely revisit!!

Went here last spring because I always wanted to check this place out and needless to say I wasn't disappointed. You can see them working on new animals for the carousel and see the volunteers that work there.
I can't wait for the actual carousel to open up, it will be awesome.

This was our 2nd visit to the Carousel in Albany and worth the couple of hours that we spent visiting with the artists and admiring the beautiful animals and the amazing craftsmanship of the carvers, painters, and planners. It is a wonderful place to take family and friends. We look forward to our next visit.
