Leave I-5 for an hour and visit this historic downtown.

Lots of very well maintained Victorian buildings and a stupendous, restored, electric power generator, mini-canals and good restaurants and clothing stores.

The Monteith District, located on the west side of downtown Albany, is named after Walter and Thomas Monteith, the founders of Albany and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Albany Visitors Association has walking maps that feature a number of the more notable houses. Having once lived in the District, I can attest to the wonderful... More

These homes are beautiful to see and to enjoy but one of the best things we enjoyed about Albany is the effort going on to restore their old carousel. Funds have been raised and a new building is currently under construction where it will be housed. The best part, 3 rows of 50 carousel horses will be on it when... More

Enjoy the the quiet streets and the beauty and diversity of historic homes. I love the tree lined streets and architecture of Albany.

We found a walking guide on the Internet, parked the car and followed the walking route. Lovely to see the old homes in the area. Not all were in pristine condition and some beautiful homes could do with a lot of TLC but if it's a nice day and you have an hour or so to spare, take a walk... More

I've driven buy Albany so many times on I-5, never realizing the beauty of this historic district. I recommend a walking tour, because there are many homes in this area and each one deserves notice. There are also some beautiful old churches, one that looks like a castle.

Great historic district with many restored homes very much worth seeing. A walking tour brochure can be obtained from the Visitors Bureau.

Very cool attention to the various stylish homes of the early Albanians(?) Several of the houses are amazingly decorated and "quaffed" with gingerbread & delicate woodwork-Best seen actually at Christmastime all lit up!

It was so much fun to see the examples of so many styles of architecture from victorian to modern. The houses were very unique and most were painted with great color choices. It was fun to see them all so close together.

This area of around 12 blocks on the SE side of downtown Albany contains an exceptionally high concentration of historic houses. They range in age from the 1849 Monteith House to the mid-20th century. One of the oldest, Monteith House, built by the town founders is the only one regularly open as a museum for tours. Nearly all of the... More
