Summit County is so blessed with its incredible MetroParks system that many people overlook the State Parks, which are much less well funded but still rewarding. One overlooked treasure is the Knapp Recreation Area, a part of Portage Lakes State Park on Cottage Grove Road. Knapp offers a nice pavilion with a portapotty in the summer months. As I said, State Parks are not well funded.

But, overlooking the lack of permanent restrooms, this little park features a lovely .8 mile hike through the woods and to the shore of Cottage Grove Lake, a portion of East Reservoir. A bench on the trail affords a view of the lovely new Main Street bridge and the beautiful water, along with nice lakefront homes, marinas, and The Ramp Restaurant. Today, in Mid-March, we saw a huge blue heron, a pair of mallards, and a pair of swans, along with gulls and other birds. An easy hike through a beautiful area.

A few years ago, we visited the park in spring or summer, and it was a bit unimpressing, with rowdy, rustic folk with loud boats, dirty, outhouses, and an overall downscale and worn out atmosphere. We went there today at sundown and stopped at several places. The impression was much better especially when parking by the lake. (including at the boat launches) and watching the lights dance off the gently wafting waves. We’ll be back again. It’s a very nice place for a couples who want a quiet, romantic Vista to stop and watch, silently, and enjoy all the subtle details of the scenery

went out with friends on their pontoon boat while we were in town. Calm waters, beautiful views of homes and some statues. There are places to pull your boat into to get something to eat, or actually stop at the park to swim

In 2016 park rangers had told us about a “small cutting and leveling” project. The project started in 2017 and all they have done is to cut down several acres of the woods leaving all the stumps and huge mounds of mulched trees. Since then, nothing has been done. If this is how they maintain the forest I would hate to see what they have done (or not done) for the beach and lake. If I could rate this park a “zero” I would.

A place for children to play in the sand and play areas. There is also a dog park there. It is a great place to watch the fire works display over the water for the July 4th celebration, but be patient, the lines of traffic get pretty long and slow during this time.

Boating, swimming, skiing, snow mobiling, all to be found around the lakes. Many bars and restaurants on the perimeter and you can take a 2 hour cruise if you don't have your own boat. There are several parts where you can rent a shelter for gatherings and charcoal grills for cooking. Electricity in the shelters also. Always clean and cared for.

We love the lake but hate all the boat traffic and the lack of more high speed areas. There are areas of really shallow water that you have to watch out for especially going under some bridges with on coming traffic. There is a lot of places to eat and drink and what we have found in "the Ramp" which was the old sandy beach. On a whole it's a great place to take the family on the lake and you can also be able to rent a boat if you need.

Brought the kids here for a day at the beach. Nice beach. Good shady area. They even had free boat rides available. Good for families.

There are several beautiful lake inlets, and the natural surroundings are fine. But the overall sense one gets is downhill maintenance and downscale public. The trais are quite limited, and the outhouses were visibly dirty. Online maps show more lake contact than is the case in reality. This could be a GREAT park, but it needs better trailhead and trail signage, better maps, and above all a nice trail going all the way along the park’s shoreline. MUCH potential, but it needs to be developed.

We went for a family reunion and we rented one of the pavilions. It was very clean and beautiful. There was a swing set close by to our pavilion and a bathroom with running water. The bathroom wasn't the cleanest I've been in to but I've also been in worse. It had running water and wasn't a port-O-potty so I won't complain. We were there for the Fourth of July weekend but there was a steady flow of police presence and state park officials patrolling by which was nice to see. Unfortunately we didn't stay for the fireworks but we spoke to some people who said the display is beautiful but keep in mind it gets crowded so arrive early if you're hoping to catch the show! The gentlemen told us you could walk across the lake on boats during the fireworks show!
