Handicap Accessible access to the Beach

We visited Fort Macon and decided to drive to the park afterwards. Great facility with lots of picnic tables. There were restrooms and ramp access to the beach. Very nicely done.

Loved exploring the fort.

Really enjoyed exploring the fort. They have tours and indoor exhibits. Staff were friendly and the grounds were very well taken care of. Great views from the top of the fort!

Well preserved fort
Jun 2021
We started in the visitor center with the mini-museum telling all about the fort. We moved outside and saw the various elements that made up the fort as well. There were some exhibits outside. At the top of the fort were some great views of the water. I read that this fort has over 2.3 million bricks, more that an other US fort. If you are in the area, I would recommend stopping by.

Perfect afternoon activity for a history buff
Aug 2021
I visited Fort Macon while on vacation at Atlantic Beach. The facility is well maintained and the visitor center is interesting and welcoming. The fort is non-commercialized and you can feel the history as you walk around. There are a few exhibits but the main draw is atmosphere and reality of what is was like there during it's occupation. There is a lack of railings and ramps in some areas, so those with small kids or mobility issues should take care. There is also a nature trail and beach access.

Stunningly Beautiful
Aug 2021 • Couples
Beautiful experience with the exception of mask mandate not being enforced. Signs on door said masks required, but greeter at desk did not wear and many visitors did not.

The Fort itself was amazing. A real North Carolina gem. The exhibits were excellent, gift store well stocked and walking around the fort was an interesting experience.

Wonderful views.

Excellent for families but walking through grounds be careful. Young kids
need to hold parent’s hand due too steep stairs and drop offs. Very educational experience.

Nice Family Time at Fort Macon State Park Beach
Aug 2021 • Family
Fort Macon State Park Beach - is a great little place, where we stopped so that the kids could have a standing lifeguard present on the beach. The parking is free, there is a concession stand and bathrooms. We were staying in Emerald Isle, where there are only patrolling lifeguards and it was just a 20- 30 minute drive. It was worth the drive, as we arrived in town after a storm, the storm surge created large waves, and the water was rough. EI is also known to have areas of rip tides.
The water was very murky, but again that was due to the recent storm that passed through. We did not go over to look at the fort, but you can do this for free as well, so I can’ t report on the rest of the park. We spent an easy 2 hours where our 12 year old boys played in the surf. They did eat the burgers from the concession stand, and loved them.

Quick historical site to see

Depending on where you are, this can be a little bit of a hike to visit. If you’re in Atlantic Beach, it’s right down the road. Anywhere else, and you have to navigate the traffic of Beaufort and/or Morehead City and cross the bridge to Atlantic Beach to get here.

It’s one of the best things to do in the entire region though, so it’s worth it. We drove all the way from Cedar Island and didn’t regret it!

The fort itself is fairly small. You can see just about everything there is to see at the fort within a couple hours max.

The rest of the park is pretty big though, with plenty of nature trails to explore and beaches to relax on. Swimming is not advisable on many of the beaches, as there is particularly viscous riptide and no lifeguards.

Free park/beach and museum. Handicap access to the museum, fort, and a beach overlook. Easily spent over an hour exploring the fort and museum. Could have spent hours at the beach. Great amount of parking, so easy beach access with little kids

Loved it here. I want to go back.

This is a fantastic place or spend a few hours for anyone interested in US history. I loved it here.

It's so cool to walk around in and see the coast from the edge.

I highly recommend this place. It even has a three mile nature walk that is really quite fantastic. The coastal beach there is wonderful too. It's is quiet and way less busy than other beach locations, although you can't swim there.
