My 15 year old son and I visited the Fort when our beach day was rained on. We didn't mind a little sprinkling at this fort though, because there are tons of rooms to duck into to learn history... Some rooms have old artifacts like money, weapons, and even wax figures wearing uniforms. You are free to climb to the... More

There is not much you can get for free anymore. Well, Fort Macon is not only free, but it is well worth the time to visit. It is within For Macon State Park which has trails, beachfront, et al. which we did not get a chance to see: it was pretty chilly and we had not brought jackets! Fortunately, a... More

I loved the view from our room. I really enjoyed walk on the beach and. being able to just go to pier and watch all the fisherman. We liked just being out in open and enjoying it. I would recommend this place to anyone that loves to set and watch the beach roll in.

Fascinating look into the lives of soldiers in many conflicts. The fort has been destroyed and rebuilt many times. It is beautiful and has spectacular views of the ocean.

I have been to Fort Macon several years ago, but my September 2016 visit noted there are lots of updates and exhibits that were not there previously (compared to 10 yrs ago). This was a much improved historical visit. First there is a relatively new informative museum with a short movie explaining the entire history of the fort, plus some... More

Excellent attraction, tours are offered. Everything is free, they accept donations. Figure on spending about two hours to see everything.

TIP - start by watching the first rate movie (22 minutes) before touring. TIP - check out the gift shop. TIP - take time to read the exhibit signs, very insightful to the past and what life was like at the fort. Plan for 2+ hours to not be rushed.

Amazing presentations of soldier's life and garrison commander's life during the Civil War. Also interesting to hear how the fort was used between the years between the Civil War and WWII, when it was used for defense against German U-boats. The grounds are pristine as well as the fort itself. Lots of interesting exhibits ranging from coastal conservation to military... More

We stumbled upon this on a recent trip to Atlantic Beach. The historic site is very interesting. We really liked the fact that we could roam around and see the various exhibits. What was the most pleasant surprise was that they were demonstrating how the cannons worked. We stayed for the demo and it was fun to see.
