This Fort was a great outing. In an hour or more, you can visit this old fort and learn some interesting history. They have several cannons and mortars that you may learn about and take cool photos with. My favorite part was going through the different exhibits of daily life in the lower fort. They have buttons you may push to get an audio lesson about life there. The fort is a cool part of history to walk around on. Be careful as “the fort was built for war, not fun”. This means lots of drop off, steep steps, etc. so take extra caution when bringing small children with you.

Decided to visit Ft. Macon while in Morehead City. Interesting fort and worth the stop. They offer guided tours, have a historic video of the fort inside and several displays to educate about the fort and area wildlife. Clean restrooms and plenty of parking. Gift shop and information inside. The best part is the entry is FREE. Prior to the fort is a nice public beach access. Worth the visit.

This was one the most impressive forts I have ever been to! Free to enter! A lot of times the area is smaller, but this restored pre-civil war fort is a whole huge yard that you walk down into with brick and zone walls surrounding. Just up the stairs from the yard are cannons that you can just picture in place ready for the enemy. The fort features military architecture such as powder magazines, counterfire rooms, and a wide moat protecting the stronghold. Looking past the cannons, during the current day and age, you will see sailboats happily sailing by. A beautiful view!

What a great surprise. On this October weekday, it was not crowded at all. Grounds and facility nicely kept. Good written narrative for this fort whose use spans over a hundred years.

What I thought would take me one hour tops, had me intrigued for at least 3 hours. Plenty of free parking by the visitor center led me to an air condition building (with bathrooms and water fountain). The volunteer guide informed me of free guided tours hosted three times a day. The guided tour is an hour where you walk the entire fort and learn of the fort's US history, civil war history, and much more.

The views walking throughout the fort are breathtaking. If you time it right, certain evenings the fort recreates the action of the cannons so you can experience (at 1/4th the ammunition power) what it would have been like back when the fort was active.

I highly recommend this for any history enthusiast, families, and friends.

A beautifully maintained fort & museum that really lets you understand what life must have been like back in the day. Thank you for not ruining it with ropes and safety garbage. Top notch place to visit in a great part of the world.

There is a sign as you walk up to the fort that it was built as a fort and not for safety. No additional railings have been added so you have to not get too close to the edges. It has weathered well and wonder full to explore.
