The Tsunami Monument is located on the south eastern part of Male city, on the Boduthakurufaanu Magu.We rented a taxi , paid for MVR 150 for a 1+ hour of city tour and photo stops. This Tsunami Monument was dedicated for those who lost their lives in the 2004 Tsunami. Some Maldivian died , many houses , businesses were destroyed.
The sea surrounding of this monument is one of best spot for surfing wihin Male .We saw huge waves at the point near the lifeguard station.
Worth a visit ,because of its history and uniqueness of the monument.

This is the only monument on the western coast of Male.
During the devastating tsunami of December 2004, 74 people lost their lives in Maldives.
This monument was built as a dedication to them.
The steel structure has 74 metal rods, each a symbol of a life lost.
Their names are written on the rods as well.
There are 20 metal malls spiraling upwards around the rods just like DNA to indicate the 20 atolls of Maldives and the rising waves that caused the devastation.
The reason why I am giving this place such a low rating is because there is not even a single plaque explaining what the monument is for! Thank god for the internet else I would have never known!!!

It is a sad place to visit but it is mostly peaceful. Hopefully all the people who died could rest in peace. I do not feel the haunting that I felt in Krabi. 82 people, including 2 British tourists were killed in the 2004 tsunami. 40 went missing. The tsunami struck at 9.30 am local time. Instead of a destructive wave, the tsunami was a rising surge of water feeling like the islands were sinking. All islands were somewhat submerged causing great property damage. infrastructure on 20 islands were completely destroyed and 79 island lack safe drinking water. 12,000 people were homeless.

This memorial is situated near Ferry ghat, 2.1km opposite to Maldive-China bridge location. It had 75 spheres marking persons who lost their lives in 2004 Tsunami. Additionally this post has beautiful sun set view and a food court (~500m) nearby. Reachable by walk.

The monument or memorial for the victims of the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami is lovey constructed with a central stainless steel structure consisting of bars and balls. Unfortunately there is no information board to inform visitors how many people died in this natural disaster. I read on the internet that 82 people were killed and 24 reported missing and presumed dead.

No this is a small monument bear the Sea shore and can be visited any time. Don't expect a great deal though.
