It's probably a good idea to go as early as you can, because you want to see as much of the action to be able to really appreciate how fresh the fish really are. You can see the boats coming in from the different islands, to them offloading the fish, and seeing the fish being delivered to the nearby fish market. It was a unique experience because whilst it was very raw, I think we can truly appreciate how hard these fishmen work to get the fish to the market and then of course to see the traders do their business.
In living in the city, sometimes we get disconnected from the food that are served to us at the table or even from the supermarket so it was a wonderful experience to see how the fish are actually brought in.

Be warned - this place is filled with fish, fish stink, and puddles of fishy liquid. But it’s cool in an 18th century way. If you’ve never been to a fish market, you should have a look. You don’t need more than a few minutes here though...

I'm not a big fish eater. As we were on a walking tour of Male.
We went to the markets. Our guide explained the importance of fishing in Maldives.
It was getting late, so there was less fish about. Some of the waste was being thrown into the sea for the stingrays.
Worth a brief look.

Interesting and active fish center with different types of fish. They have a long table where they cut up and clean the fish for you. Be careful in flip flops cause a lot of bloody water on the ground. But interesting place to wander for 10 minutes.

This review is quite late. I booked the walking tour in Male City through UI Inn and Male Fish Market was among the places we visited. Compared to other fish markets I have been to, this one is quite small. At any rate, there was a local restaurant nearby where where no tourist can be seen. I think this is one of the best kept secrets of the city. I was able to sample Maldivian cuisine at bargain prices. Thanks to the guide who brought me here. I could have spent a fortune easily on one of the restaurants catering to tourists.

Fun and interesting, it's nice to see all that is happening inside this market. Don't skip it! We recomend to eat near the fish market, a place called Down Town, it's open 24h and it's where all the fisherman eat. You can have the real taste of Maldivian food. And at great price!

This place is full of all kinds of fishy smells, fishy puddles, and fish you’ve never seen before. Charming in an 18th century way but you don’t need to linger longer than a few minutes. Definitely worth a look!

If you have time, it's good to have a look. But it's just like other fish markets. There are fresh big fishes available but if you are a tourist and you don't want to buy any of them, it will only take you a few minutes to look around.

Written 30 March 2017
Рынок очень маленький, там только свежая рыба, но рядом много магазинчиков, где вы сможете найти вяленного тунца.

How to go to Male Fish Market. Where it is located. ?
Written 17 February 2016
don't know where you'll be coming from but if you are the airport ferry terminal go up on Sosun Magu till Majeed Magu road (you're at the corner of the ADK hospital); turn left on Faashanaa Kilege Magu and you'll run right into the market.
But be sure to watch the fishing boats at the harbor (way more fun and interesting). Enjoy
