A must visit if you are in the capital city Male', The site has a 17th century cemetery of sultans and important figures adjacent to it. The site also has a coral stone minaret. It was built about 350 years ago. The interior of the mosque contains one of the most important woodcarvings and laquerwork in the country.

Male does not have many historical sites and the Old Griday Mosque clearly is the most important. Dating back to 1656 this still operating mosque is delicately carved out of old coral stone with some beautiful and intricate designs. Unfortunately, the building gets somewhat lost underneath the corrugated steel structure which was installed to protect the mosque from the elements (one would have hoped something more elegant would have been designed). The mosque is surrounded by a very old Cemetary and some simple gardens. Access to the mosque interior is possible but (1) you better be properly attired and (2) you need permission.

According to our guide, this dates back about 400 years. Out there is a water well used for washing before prayers and there was on the floor a jug at the end of a long pole used to draw water. Interesting and again worth a visit.

In a relatively modern city this is a well-preserved piece of the past.
As others have said non-Muslims can only view the outside and surrounding tombs, however even that gives you a sense of the history of the religion in the Maldives.
Perhaps some further English explanations around the site might be helpful for visitors.

I found this site at UNESCO waiting list tentative heritage site before I really visit this site where it is a unique little mosque with rich cultural and history of Maldives.
Tips : Visit Male with a walking tour around the central where the souvenir shops located, Then walk towards the independence square of maldives. Visit the Islamic center and then the Hukuru Miskiiy is in the middle of the city (behind Trader Hotel).

This mosque is an important part of the history of Maldives. It is easy to find in the city of Male. Inside of the Mosque area there are an old cemetary from the 17th century for the Royal. If you like history, this site is worth a visit, just be sure that you are properly dressed.

From the point of architecture, it is one of the most important buildings of Male. It has also a very impressive interior. Also corals were used to build it. As it is still in use as a mosque, you have to keep some rules of course (closed shoulders and women closed knees) and be respectful to the religion, but this you should do when you visit any religious monument. People are friendly and help you, when you ask or you want something to know. I think it is a must for every Male visitor.

This historic mosque dating back to the 1600's still operates today. It is a magnificent old building carved out of coral stone. The mosque has an ancient cemetery in its grounds and is surrounded by a simple garden.

i wouldnt recommend in male....you rather should stay in maafushi and take a ferry ride to do a day tour....male is not worth staying. if you are coming to maldives you are.not going there to see the crowded streets...you are there for the serene beaches and peace. stay at some island and take a day tour....male is too expensive to live and hotels are not even nice
