I made a visit to Vivekananda Kendra on 14 July 2024 along with wife and Kid and stayed there till 15 July 2024. We have booked a A/C room, but ac was not working till we complained and repaired by night. The room not even had a television or any Scenery. The Service of Staffs is better not to mention. Since it was not a pleasant morning sunrise was not visible (cloudy) .The Good thing to mention is their Private Beach and Beautiful Campus with Peacocks

The easiest way to get to the Vivekananda Ashram is using the LRT to get to KL Sentral. After exiting KL Sentral walk some five to seven minutes down Jalan Tun Sambanthan to get to the Ashram on the left side of the road.

This building is in remarkably good shape given that it is over a hundred years old! It was built in 1904 to commemorate the spiritual leader and social reformer Swami Vivekananda's 1893 visit to what was then called Malaya.

The structure is built in faux Mughal style. An elegant statue of Swami Vivekananda, serene and dignified, attired in his usual flowing robes, stands on a pedestal at the centre of a circular lawn in front of the building. The building itself is set in clean, spacious grounds adorned by a simple yet attractive garden of brightly flowering plants.

The building doors were closed when we visited but we could see the austere meditation hall through the glass windows. The overall sense is of deep peace, quiet and inner calm - perfectly aligned with this great man's all too short life and work.

Apparently real estate developers (read land sharks) had made a spirited attempt in 2004 to demolish this heritage structure with the sacrilegious intent of replacing it with an up-market condominium project - an extremely attractive proposition with the land being located on the main Jalan Tun Sambanthan road in the bustling Brickfields area. However, local citizens and well wishers of the Ashram were apparently able to stave off this unholy move and the Vivekananda Ashram is still being used for spiritual education classes and prayer meetings.

One can only hope that altruistic human values and good sense will continue thwarting base commercial greed.

This is the building that is Heritage site @ Brickfield where they should kept it as it's since tourist do like to drop by and visit. Very few pre-war building left behind. The opposite of the pre-war houses been demolished for high-rise.

It is an ashram. Notice on front mentioned its private property so i did not roam much inside. No signs or entrance details for tourists. Nice Vivekananda statue to connect with history and feel proud . Overall nice experience but can be made better for tourists.

I'm glad that Kuala Lumpur is preserving some of its old colonial buildings instead of clearing them for faceless office blocks. This one has a date of 1904 over the entrance and a statue of Swami Vivekanada in the forecourt erected there in 1993.

An old building which is over a hundred years old but is well maintained. In the news for a tug of war with developers who intend to pull down the building for a commercial project. Let us hope good sense will prevail.

Though over a hundred years old and being an icon of the (Jaffna) Tamil community in KL the ashram is not a heritage site. It is considered private property and has considerable commercial value. I understood the trustees seek to convert the property into cash in order to sustain the development of Tamil schools also under their supervision. A stalemate is the result, as many people want to preserve the ashram and statue of Vivekananda as it is.

Vivekananda is best known as promoter of Hinduism and its recognition as a world religion. He died in 1902 aged 39. It is not surprising that Tamils from Jaffna, Sri Lanka chose him for spiritual inspiration as they were / are a minority in Buddhist majority Sri Lanka. The Buddhist temple founded by Sri Lanka's buddhists is not far away from the ashram.

This ashram dedicated to Vivekanada, can be found in Little India, Brickfields, just along the main drag from the monorail station. I went at night, so could not get into property (not sure if you can) but took a stroll around it. Amazing preservation and floodlit at night. Worth a few minutes of your time if in the area.

A favourite among the tourists visiting Kuala Lumpur.
Good take care of an historic building from 1904, honouring Swami Vivekananda. Well manicured garden and building has a new coat of paint.
