Two beautiful old buildings, the Railway Building and Railway Station, relics of a bygone age and now the office of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad. Built in 1910 and 1917 to designs of British soldier/architect, Arthur Hubback, in the Moorish architectural style popular during the period. When first sighted, I assumed I was looking at a mosque with the ornate facades, domes and minarets atop the buildings. Its a shame that the buildings have not been converted to museums as available information is descriptive of the mix of architectural features and styles that adorn the inferiors. Unfortunately, the exteriors require some TLC, the deterioration of the structure very noticeable in places.

Kuala Lumpur's original railway station had its glorious days, but nowadays it is a crumbling building that is unfit for the Malaysian capital. Yes, it is a notable colonial architectural gem but maintenance is poor. There is a pressing need of repair.

The old KL railway station is worth seeing as it is a beautiful building, some of it is falling into disrepair, but it's not hard to see how it would have looked in its heyday.

We stayed at the Majestic Hotel which is about 100 metres south of the Malayan Railway Administration Building (MRAB) - and walked past this Building quite a few times on the way to other attractions. It is opposite the Old Kuala Lumpur Railway Station which we used often to get to some more distant tourist spots. The MRAB is being used as office space but also has closed off areas, for safety reasons, which are deteriorating and literally breaking up and falling in bits to the ground. It is a magnificent and regal looking building, worth a few photos, but not accessible within. Not far from the MRAB is the National Mosque of Malaysia (5 minutes) and further up Jalan Perdana - Jalan Lembah (another 10 minutes walk) is the Islamic Arts Museum of Malaysia which has an entry fee but is well worth a look (it is also air conditioned!). Nearby you will also find the Planetarium Negara, the Royal Malaysian Police Museum, and the massive Perdana Botanical Garden complex. So, in summary, the MRAB is worth a look at, but that's all - but your visit is not wasted because there is so much more to see in the immediate area.

This building is a lovely blend of Indo-Islamic and what to me looks a lot like the Gujarati architecture epitomised by the Mahabat Maqbara of Junagadh with those spiral towers. Not a must-see in KL, but I was on the way to Perdana Bontanical Garden and I happen to pass this building.

It is still used as a train station but it is not much busy. We came here with train to see the station. Building is very nice, perfect piece of architecture.

As someone interested in trains, I disembarked at this station to have a look around. Be aware that train schedules at this station is fairly ireegular so be prepared to take a different form of transport to your next destination or check schedules in advance so you can catch the train at the right times. Also be aware that TripAdvisor does not have the right location for this attraction. Just use your Apple Maps (or whatever your device provides) and look for Kuala Lumpur station (making sure to avoid Sentral which is a different station location much further away). Apart from the infrastructure, there is not much to see as there is not many trains stopping here. This station seems to be a shadow of its former self with only sufficent maintenance done in order to keep it as a operational station.

My girlfriend and I went to this train station to catch the KTM train to Butterworth and then catch the short ferry to Penang Island. We could have boarded the train at KL Central but I wanted to spend some time admiring the wonderful architecture of colonial Malaysia.

We have been to train stations all over the world but we were amazed at the architecture and cleanliness of this station. Truly a must-see and a wonder in KL. The KTM ride to Butterworth wasn't bad either.
