Against the backdrop of the busy city is this quiet haven on "Temple" road. While very understated in it's presentation, it is rich with history, and quiet corners to sit in peace.

Take a walk along the river, admire the bridges, enjoy the art cafes and the small shops. The street behind is famous for the many old temples you can find there. This one is the largest and oldest one (1620). Peaceful, with a lovely small...More

Another impressive temple in Nagasaki. It was quite cheap to enter and there was some English information available too. Impressive structures. You may not need too long here, would be good to combine visiting it with walking to other temples nearby.

When you have visited a number of temples they all start to look the same. Got some great pics here. When you go into the main hall there were lots of little vivariums with crickets in.

What makes it "worthwhile" to visit this temple is its beautiful grounds with neat lawns & blue hydrangea flowers (maybe seasonal flowers though), but here you won't see any big beautiful pond with rocks & colorful fish in it as you would at many Japanese...More

This is my favorite buddhist temple in Nagasaki. A great place to visit at any season and visit the well kept gardens. Superb historical buildings, Relaxing and calm atmosphere.

This temple is very close to 3 other smaller temples (Jinsoji, Sanpoji & Joanji) so these can be visited free of charge either before or after a visit to Kofukuji Temple. Going through the Entrance Gate there is a ticket kiosk. The site has a...More

The temple and buildings are well situated on a hillside and the overall atmosphere is serene. The wood is rough and worn. The grounds well-maintained. Gorgeous, old sago palm trees abound. The history is palpable especially when you consider it is the oldest temple in...More

This is the oldest Obaku Sect Buddhist temple in Japan and one of the several temples built by and for Chinese dwellers in Nagasaki during the Tokugawa Period. Since every building is painted dark red, the complex is commonly known as “The Red Temple (aka-dera)”...More
