Fukusaiji is one of several Chinese temples in Nagasaki. But it is quite unique unlike other temples. There is a big statue of Guanyin Buddha standing on the back of a turtle. But it doesn’t seem to be a temple, but an object of art. Inside, there is a pendulum of Foucault, but it was out of order as I visited.

It's certainly unlike other Buddhist temples I have visited. Inside the main hall it felt more like being in a modern church. The whole building was a bit too futuristic for my taste but I'm probably just old-fashioned. But it's surely something different and worth a visit.

As we are strolling about, we find an unpromising, narrow stairway headed up in about the region where the Kannon, soaring some 60 foot/18 metres above ground standing on the back of a giant turtle, keeps watch over Nagasaki. As we work through the turns of the stair we begin to see Kannon’s head, then soon the really alaming head of the turtle. The turtle, in fact, is the Main Hall of the shrine which was rebuilt after the original, quite ordinary, temple was destroyed by the atomic bomb. Close in around the turtle here are grave sites and memorial stones which appear quite ancient. There is also a 82 foot/25 metre Foucault Pendulum which hangs from the ceiling just in front of the altar, the cord passing through a hole in the floor to the plum bob in the basement below. And as we leave we notice a route to the basement, where we turn on the light and see the cord of the pendulum almost imperceptibly moving. We leave by a large set of stairs beyond a parking lot for the temples and see that this is in fact the main entrance to the temple complex.

When walking towards the temple the statue of the goddess is towering above us and when arriving the sight of this at least 15 meter height statue is awesome. Also every day at 11:02 AM a bell is rang as a remebrance of the atomic bomb attack.

This place really stands out, it's not so much the temple but the roof and statue. The statue is very visible but when you walk up the hill and under the arch and see it close up it really impresses. The roof of the main building is a turtle with the main statue on its back as well as three children reaching up to it.
The temple itself is nothing special but that roof really does make up for it.

Fukusaiji Temple in Nagasaki was founded in 1628, originally as a zen temple. During the dropping of the atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki on August 9th, 1945, the temple was completely destroyed. It was rebuilt in its present particular shape, a giant turtle at the base with an 18 meter statue of a Kannon (a goddess of compassion) standing on its back. In my opinion a unique and interesting construction of a temple and is instantly recognizable within the Nagasaki skyline.

Fukusaiji Temple Nagasaki also has another claim to fame. It has a fascinating addition, a Foucault pendulum which is a device used to show the rotation of the earth. Normally found in universities or planetariums, it is one of only five in Japan. The pendulum is the third largest in the world and is only dwarfed by the ones in Paris and St Petersburg. I am pretty sure that the only Foucault pendulum to be found in an active place of worship and can be witnessed here at Fukusaiji Temple. I am sure that 99% of Nagasakians wouldn't know anything about this incredible fact and you could be more in the know then the locals with 1 visit to this amazing place.

If you have an interest in Buddhism, unique architecture an or just like to take photos of rare and special attractions then this is your place to visit! You will be drawn in by its uniqueness because its a place that even if you have travelled the world you might not find anything more incredible than this placs.

Situated within walking distance from JR Nagasaki Station, Fuku - saji is a unique Chinese temple of the city with outstanding architecture and aesthetics. The temple is undoubtedly a 'must - visit' attraction of Nagasaki, where one would not only get to learn more about the temple's history, but also be awed by its magnificence! One may consider visiting the 26 Martyrs Museum, which is another attraction only 4 minutes away from the temple. This would certainly enhance your overall experience in this historically and culturally rich city!

This temple is quite different to many we saw in Japan. The Fukusai-ji Temple was founded in 1628 but destroyed in 1945. It has since been reconstructed in the shape of a turtle with an 18 metre statue of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion.
We preferred the older style temples, but this one being a bit different was worth visiting.
