Touted as the largest onsen-theme park at Kansei, Solaniwa is a large public family-friendly onsen thats only a few stops away from Osaka Station. It boasts natural hotspring baths (indoor & outdoor), hot stone bath, foot bath, fish therapy, roof top Garden, relaxation lounges & restaurants. For only about $11 USD you can chill here for the whole day.

You get there via the Osaka loop line, get off at Wakayama station, 5 min walk to the Art Hotel Bay tower where the onsen is located. Hotel guests have free admission. Once inside just follow the peeps infront of you: grab towels, choose your yukata, go to locker room to change, then start exploring. You will have 3 lockers: 1st for the shoes near entrance, 2nd for your clothe, 3rd for the yukata right before you get naked for the onsen.

For men there were 3 big outdoor baths and at least that many indoor. Footbath located at open air Rooftop Garden level. We didn't try the restaurants but did sampled the excellent milk from the vending machine. Everything is charged/scanned onto your wrist band.

Staff were friendly, all the signs have English translation. This is def not a touristy spot, prob 90% are Japanese patrons. It was an impressive facility but still 1 notch below the Spadium at Tokyo.

Solaniwa Onsen opened recently in Feb 2019. It is easy to find after getting off metro station. The new facility has many direction signs for indoor and outdoor onsen pools. There are 3 wristbands: first one after you check in (for locking your shoes and food charge back), second one for locking your clothing in second floor (changing to Yutata bathrobe (provided) and third one for locking your Yutata in fifth floor to onsen pool. All ramens are over 1000 yen. They have a nice outside garden with foot bath (free) and fish therapy (fee based) in fifth floor.

I have visited hundreds of onsen in Japan. Many are located in the countryside in seemingly natural settings with rivers, rocks and mountain scenery. This one is located in the metropolis of Osaka yet has a traditional Japanese garden with black pine and cedar trees, a foot bathing stream, a "Dr. Fish" spa, plus the regular hot bathing pools. Great photo opportunities since the gardens are in areas where guests wear traditional yukata and slippers.

Solaniwa Onsen is located at Osaka Bay Tower which look like an office building to me. It is not difficult to get here. Just follow Google map.

I bought the tickets online prior to visiting and booked a private Onsen room on their website.

There are clear instructions on what to do when you arrive. At the counter, each of us were given a tag. Use it to scan for food or paid activities and we will be billed during check out before we leave the Onsen place. We kept our shoes at the locker provided and were given socks. Choose your bathrobe, grab a towel and get changed in the toilet. Lockers are provided to keep our belongings.

Check out their website for the detailed activities you can do.

The private Onsen is nice and relaxing. Shower gel and shampoo is also provided. It was also my first time to visit a public Onsen. There are many different bath and each are labelled with their benefits and temperature on it.
There is an area with recline chairs to relax and we fell asleep on it after our bath. Rooftop garden have many nice photo spots too.
The restaurant serve very nice affordable Japanese food.
We spend almost the whole day unwinding at Solaiwa Onsen. Definitely will return again if we visit Osaka. It is a must visit!

If you are interested in a traditional spa experience, but don’t know how to go about it, then this new offering ticks all the boxes. Here’s the rundown of what you can expect:

Upon entry, you are welcomed and escorted to the check-in counter, where you receive two wristbands: one includes your locker key and the other a microchip that enables you to record purchases inside the spa. The thing that struck me here was the level of English spoken; I’ve never been to any tourist attraction, store or restaurant in Japan with so many English speaking-staff. Definitely a plus point.

The next step is to choose a kimono to wear during your stay and then off to the (gender-separated) locker room to change. I put everything in my locker (including my phone) and then wandered out to the lobby in my kimono. From there, you have a range of options:

There’s a hot rock spa and sauna, as well as a relaxation/sleeping area on the same level as the lobby. Up on the 4th floor, there’s an open air rooftop garden and heated foot spa area, complete with traditional torii gates and even a live band playing traditional music. On the next level, there is an open air hot spring, separated into male and female areas. No clothes allowed here, you need to leave your garments at the entrance.

Overall, it’s a huge complex, and it’s amazingly peaceful and somehow liberating to experience “old Japan” without the distractions of technology. That said, there are still photo opportunities and the staff can photograph you and then tap your QR chip on your wristband so you can download later.

I spent 4 hours here all in all, but upon entry you can stay until 9am the following morning (I wonder if anyone sleeps here?). Entry is 2600 yen and most facilities are free. The fish spa costs 1000 yen extra and sake or beer is reasonably priced at the bar.

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable and very satisfying experience. I’ve been telling my friends about this place ever since I went there.

We had the chance to come the day of the opening of Solaniwa Onsen! It's a great place to unwind and enjoy the hot springs. We got lockers to keep our belongings, wore yukatas and then had amazing Japanese food. Then headed to the hot spring baths, separate for men and women. Amazing experience at the traditional Japanese public baths. The garden is very large and you can enjoy the foot baths even in these winter days as warm coats are available for the guests. We loved the whole experience so much!

1) Yukatas were really pretty - great selection. Best to take a few sets of towels before heading up to the fifth floor for the onsen as there aren’t any towel stations upstairs.

2) Bring your camera with you upstairs as there’s lots of instgrammable photo taking spots on the way to the onsen, including game arcade areas and fish spa therapy for the feet. Strawberry milk at the vending machine nearby was sugoi (wonderful)!

3) Nice rooftop outdoor area (exit from 5th floor) with nice photo taking opportunities yet again. Outdoor slippers provided. Male and female get to meet again.

4) Hot stone baths on the main floor were relatively small but when I went on a Sunday, the crowd was manageable and there wasn’t any timed entry restriction. Lots of couples enjoy their time together since the hot stone baths are not gender specific (except for one small hot bath area).

Gender specific onsen baths on the fifth floor were sufficient (although not overtly spacious): almond bath, silk bath, carbonated bath, a couple of hot baths etc. cold bath, steam room and sauna. Most baths were around 38.3 - 40 deg. I found only one bath that was at 43 deg which was a tad hot in my opinion.

5) Compared to other onsens, this place generally lacked a nice aromatherapy smell, hence in some areas like the hot stone baths, there can be at times a tiny whiff of sourish sweaty smell….but it passes quickly as the ventilation is pretty good.

6) Plentiful hair dryers for the ladies; there are two large women’s toilets on the main floor and fifth floor (onsen level). Many will use the hairdryers on the 5th floor. You are asked to change out of your clothes into your yutaka on the main floor and use the lockers there before going to the onsen on the 5th floor. When you are done (showered), you can come back down in your yukatas for make-up and blow dry. Otherwise, you will have to bring your makeup stuff and clothes to the upstairs lockers.

7) Lounge areas are towards the hot stone bath area on the main and third floor. You can grab mangas and magazines on the second floor.

Came here on last day in Osaka as a break from sensory bombardment that is downtown Osaka. My wife and I had a lovely day here and both loved the relaxed feel of the place

This was our first onsen and we really enjoyed it. Instructions are pretty clear for those unsure of what to do (like us!). You get a traditional robe on entry to walk around in, you can enjoy the rooftop footbath together, and then the indoor baths are gender segregated and you de-robe. Lots of different baths to choose from, all facilities super clean and staff friendly. Recommend!

I don't really want to write a bad review because the business itself was nice and a cool experience. What I didn't like was that the Japanese patrons made us feel less than welcomed. When we got in the onsen, some of the Japanese women ran out. It happened to the males in our party too in their onsen. I think the point of going to a spa is to feel relaxed and pampered. Instead I felt like I was dirty, not welcomed, and starred at hard because I am not Japanese. Wouldn't recommend for foreigners and will not return.
