From JR station take bus # 3. You can get all the info, maps and instructions from the tourist station in Nagano....and quite a bit of info at the tourist center at Matsushiro. I spent 4 hours here, lots of different sites to see. Highly recommended.

These days Matsushiro is pretty much a suburb of Nagano, but it was once a great castle town. We spent a nice couple of hours here visiting the museum, the military school and one of the former samurai residences. Were we not so tired from previous day's sightseeing we would have spent another hour or so here exploring more streets... More

. . . . worth seeing for several reasons. One is the surprisingly-large and extensive tunnel complex carved by forced laborers out of the mountainside that were intended to house communication systems during the war. A sobering sight. Another is the excellent Sanada Clan Museum which houses many of the elegant possessions of the warlord who once ruled the town.... More

Easy to get to outside of Nagano, remains of the castle and about 6 old Samurai houses, its a great half day side trip
