We followed the advice from other posters. We took the #30 Bus from the JR Nagano Station busstop #3. About 30 min and 650 Yen later we arrived at the transit center and walked about two blocks to the museum. The single museum ticket was only 300 Yen. It had a few English titles on exhibits, but no English text. That’s something they could work on, but otherwise it is an excellent place for anyone, like us, that had watched all 50 episodes of the Japanese TV Series. D-LIbrary is still carrying for streaming in the US. And it’s a good way for us to practice listening to Japanese with English subtitles. Before you walk back to the transit center, checkout the small store facing the parking lot. They have the best swirl soft serve cones with “mixed” milk (vanilla) and blueberry. Great on a hot summer day.

It's not my first time to go there. I went there last time in 2009, I came here again in 2016 due to the Daiga Dorama (大河ドラマ) "Sanada maru (真田丸)" on air. As a fans of Sanada clan and this dorama I made this plan to Nagano so early last year.

Thanks to Sanada maru, the exhibitions I could see inside were a lot more than what I recalled in 2009. Even my Japanese was not good, I could understand most of the context inside, thanks to the detail explanation given in Japanese. However, explanation in English was very limited.

I could notice something new especially there was one newly discovered letter which was written by Sanada Nobushige (真田信繁) listed as an exibition item which was very great. By going through all items and description in detail, it's definitely good to understand Sanada history in depth, greatly recommended.

Starters: There is a bus to get here that is not the JR rail. If you are interested, you need to take the Alpico line bus 30 from the Nagano City Bus Bay 3. Alpico is not included in Google Maps. It's a 30 minute ride. You'll get off at Mitsushihiro Station and walk about five minutes to the Sanada Treasure Museum. It costs 640 yen one way.

All the information is in Japanese, but if you know your Sanada family history, you can sort of piece together parts of it. They have a seasonal exhibit that rotates throughout the year. This year it was about horses and the relationships the Sanada family and samurai had with their steeds. Everything was so cool, and it was incredible that they have items on display dating back to the 1600s. Overall just a super cool place.

When you enter you can buy a ticket that also gets you into the school and the Sanada house, which is definitely worthwhile.

Definitely worth the visit if you are into Japan history. Understand how the whole clan ruled and evolved through detailed timelines. There is a feature on various battles which the Sanada participated.

Matsushiro was possibly more popular than it usually is when we visited it, thanks to the NHK drama 'Sanada Maru', currently airing on TV. The exhibition at the museum was in relation to the drama. The museum had some great artefacts on display, especially the three armour sets we got to see. Sadly, only the labels and the introductory panel were translated into English, so you were stuck understanding what the artefacts were in relation to if you knew nothing of the history. It was only that we'd previously read up on the history of Yukimura Sanada that we had some idea, my average Japanese skills were failing me when I was trying to read the interpretation panels.
You can buy a discount pass that includes entry to Sanada House and the Literary School which makes it a worthwhile couple of hours of sightseeing.

The Japanese are are proud people and amongst the proudest were the samurai class that were in a way the upper class of feudal Japan. The Sanada museum is a beautifully restored residence which portrays the exclusive life the lords of the time lived. Long hallways and paper walls must have been the scene of many an interesting life as you may have seen in Japanese movies and soapies about feudal Japan or even in the "Last Samurai". The Japanese architecture of the time was plain but practical and the combination of nature and human existence blended beautifully with the gardens and residence. Our guide told us the garden with its manicured lawn, pond and what looked like age old pine trees, was not for walking in but for admiring from the deck of the residence.
