夏の送り火 左大文字に関係する寺院のようです。説明書からですが、施設餓思会で使用された火が左大文字の親火になるそうです。

五山の送り火に関連する左大文字の発祥地として名前が知られているお寺ですが、見た目からはそういうのがわかる特徴はない普通のお寺です。詳しい縁起については入り口の横に全部書かれてあるので、気になる人は全部読んでみると良いと思います。

菩提樹山の山号を有する「左大文字」に関する縁起を有する浄土宗西山禅林寺派寺院、元々は天台宗寺院だったらしい。慈覚大師が創建と伝わっている。

五山の送り火、又は精霊送り（大文字「焼き」などとは京都では絶対に云いません）の中では嵐山の鳥居形松明以外は全て地元にある「寺院」と深いかかわりを有しており、今に残る宗教的、伝統的な行事として地元や檀家の維持努力で続けられているものです。ここも左大文字のお寺として知られています。大文字は元々は空海が始めたと云う伝承もあります。左大文字は他の送り火よりも後の時代に始められたと云う伝承もあります。「旧大北山村」の菩提寺としてこの行事を受け継いで来たと云われています。

左大文字を見てきたら偶然にもこの寺に導かれた。この寺は左大文字の発祥地旧大北山村の菩提寺でもあり、毎年8／16朝、本寺にて施設餓思会が行なわれ、その際の火が左大文字の親火となって使用されるって聞いたものだから自分でも驚いた。

金閣寺前バス停より徒歩で３分。西大路通の一筋東、衣笠街道の一角にあるお寺です。犬が吠えて中に入ることはできません。駒札には平安時代に創建、浄土宗のお寺で、左大文字の送り火の際はこのお寺の火が親火になるとのこと。
