It's a small, peaceful shrine that puts you into the right mind set for the walk on the Philosopher's path. Don't go out of the way to visit it unless you are doing the Philosopher's path.

I wanted to visit this shrine as it is one of the three Kyoto Kumano shrines which enshrine the three Kumano mountains found to the south in Wakayama. I lived in Wakayama for a time and visited the three sacred mountains, so I felt the need to stop in here and pay my respects. The shrine does not attract as many visitors as the more colorful and extensive temples to the north so it is a nice place to rest and reflect. There is a small covered area with a few benches and small tables near the entrance to the shrine grounds and there are a couple of vending machines for refreshments. I understand the that place has some beautiful sakura trees and bright red maples for seasonal viewing, but I was there when the foliage was still full and green. The priests on the grounds were friendly and the ofuda for the shrine is rather beautiful. This is a perfect end to the tour of the Philospher's Walk when moving from north to south. The walk across town to the Heian Jingu is also easy to navigate and not far at all.

This shrine has an unusual attraction, it must be the lanterns that adorn the exterior. If there visit it, but don't need to go out of your way.

Kumano Nyakuoji Shrine is located along the Philosopher's Walk. The place is very quiet with not much visitors. Some sakura trees are blosooming around the shrine and the place can be regarded as a photo-stop for travelers as well.
