The area
Neighbourhood: Pontocho
Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls, Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life, making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly atmosphere and delicious food. Verandas are always filled with people young and old crowding tables, biting into hot yakitori or sipping cold beers. It is a culinary heart of Kyoto as much as one of its most laid-back, clamorous, and entertaining evening hotspots. Pontocho has more of an amiable vibrancy to it than an elegant one, attracting newcomers, local veterans, and everyone in between, in casual attire like sneakers and jeans.

While the bridge isn't amazing itself, the walkways on the banks of the river are very nice. A lot of people go and sit near the water to just relax and on a day where the weather permits, it's a nice break from everything else. I enjoyed seeing people in everyday life running along the trail, people fishing and just the simple, everyday life. It was neat to see the houses lined up along the banks as well.

Crossing this bridge will allow you to look at the surrounding buildings and pretty scenery. But do only if you are passing by.

A large bridge in bustling Kyoto city center, Shijo bridge is well constructed, if not overdeveloped, where the clear water of Kamo river flowing slowly and low. The riverbed is massively enforced with concrete, and a pedestrian path is built so people can sit and walk along the riverside. Stepping stones were built to cross the river.
At night, the city lights are reflected on the river.
Visit this bridge while you are roaming around Pontocho, Teramachi dori or Gion district.

I know its just a bridge but it connects Shijo Dori and leads to Gion and the Yasaka Shrine. - can get very crowded at night. Next to it are small streets where the restaurants and bars are located

The bridge connects the eponymous street and gion quarter. Because of this, more animated than neighbours. The statue of Perch, the servant of the sanctuary Izumo Taisha, the female founder of the Kabuki male theater stands at the bridge on the side of Gion.

This is the bridge leading from modern Kyoto district into Gion over the Kamo river. Vehicular traffic and pedestrian traffic are both very dense but very orderly, as are in all the Japanese town I have been to. The pavement is spotless clean. It was a pleasant experience looking over the bridge railing at both riverbanks where locals and tourists are sitting and enjoying the view. The bridge is part of Shijo Street, going straight to Yasaka shrine on the East end. The shrine is beautifully built, dates back over a thousand years ago.

Nice wide bridge on top of the river where folks can walk along and admire the river as well as take in nice views of the buildings on the side of the river. Popular with locals as well.

The bridge overlooks the river. It connects between the Gion area and the Shijo area. On both banks of the river, there are small restaurants and it is pretty at night.

We passed-by this bridge after Dinner at Pontocho Alley area. There are plenty of shops nearby and you will pass this bridge to get to the nearby train station. Night time view is probably better due to the street and shop lights. There is also a taxi queue at the end of the bridge.
