This is a very symbolic place for Japanese people, as it was once the goal of Tokaido. Today, it is still an important bridge over Kamogawa, and there is a station of Keihan nearby. The view from the bridge is beautiful, and every time I come here I realize being in Kyoto.

A bridge is a bridge is a bridge. Sanjo bridge has a little more history attached to it and there has always been a bridge structure here that spans across to the other side for hundreds of years. A good place to stop and watch the river activities along the span. In the evening the taverns and bars light up this area. Most important, it is one of the major bridges that leads into the Gion district

Neighbourhood: City Center

No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. The historic bridge over Kamo Liver is still the central area to enjoy eating, drinking, shopping, etc. in Kyoto!!

Sanjō bridge spans the Kamo River as part of Sanjō-dōri (Third Avenue) in Kyoto. It is well-known because it served as the ending location for journeying on both the Nakasendō and the Tōkaidō, which were two of the famous "Five Routes" for long distance travelers during the Edo Period in Japan's past. Sanjo station of Keihan Line and Sanjo-Keihan station of subway Tozai(east-west) line exist in the east-side of the bridge. Gion area and Higashiyama area are in the southeast of the bridge. You can enjoy Pontocho and its dining-out "Kawayuka" restaurants overlooking the Kamo River in the summer(May -September) in the south-west of the bridge. Sanjo bridge and Shijo bridge areas are the center of Kyoto to enjoy for hundreds of years!!

Cool place to hangout

Found lots of young people hanging out, playing music around the bottom of the bridge. It was a pleasant surprise and they were all friendly and maybe a little drunk.

Understanding the history, but go there for the view

The bridge was more useful for crossing the river than anything else. We lived on one side of the river, everything else was on the other side (except Sanjo Station). The view of the surrounding area from the bridge is very good, however, and not to be underestimated. If you go to Kyoto, get to the bridge to have a look at the mountains in either direction. The Shijo bridge was a bit more interesting historically in terms of the buildings on either side. The best part of the Sanjo bridge was the Starbucks and the Nishiki Market which is reached by crossing the bridge from our hotel.

I walked across it and saw it next to it every day on my tour bus. It is the finishing point of the 53rd stage of the Tokaido route, and is also the starting point if you are going to Edo (present-day Tokyo). It is also the birthplace of the relay race. The construction has been completed and it has been renovated and is beautiful.

The birthplace of Ekiden

Sanjo Ohashi Bridge is the finish point of the 53 stations of the Tokaido Road, and also the starting point for those going to Edo (present-day Tokyo). It is also the birthplace of the long-distance relay race.
