Such a beautiful villa. Perched up high above Kyoto, up some steps and into the beautiful grounds with water features. Check the kitchen out (see photo) just outside the kitchen is a well. Visited by Charles and Diana, there's photos, we attempted to take a photo where the stood. RECOMMENDED

Although I passed by several times, it was my first time to visit this temple. Ichijoji is a quiet and undisturbed nice place. But as I went for red leaves viewing, there were overcrowded with tourists. I will go back again, when there are less visitors.

Visited in the middle of November and the fall colors were at peak! The view of the garden from the temple is spectacular. A bamboo tone fills from a fountain then spills over, making a "pop" noise as it swings back around. This was used to scare deer from the garden but adds some lovely acoustics! Walk through the garden... More

Away from the maddening crowd Shisendi is so calm and peaceful! This was a private residence and is perfect expression of Sukiyaki residential living style for the noblemen of the last century that we can still experience today. So different from the temples and Imperial residences that are so impressive , yet this is a gem. It is a must... More

We walked down then up from Enkoji, following our map, looking for Shisendo. We stopped to photo a rustic gate and continued on looking for Shisendo. We entered the small grounds of a shrine complex thinking it to be Shisendo but it turned out to be Hachidai Shrine. From here we looked down into a garden with colorful fall foliage.... More

Both Shisendo and Manjuin have beautiful garden but the former has bigger one and you can walk around there. Highly recommendable. You need to walk in this area and my recommendation is Shisendo-Manjuin-Shuugauin in this way and not opposite way. Thus you can climb down and not climb up.

This is a mountain cottage built by Jyozan Isikawa in 1641, but now it is related to the Eihei temple of Daihonnzan Soutou sect. The garden is small, but has everything what you would expect in a Japanese garden. It is just beautiful! By the time we visited (middle of February), red Camellias were blooming, and mosses were green. The... More

Shishendo was not on my list. Our guide and driver of MK Taxi recommended it when we visited nearby Enkoji. I am so thankful to him for suggesting this place. One of the best gardens we visited in Kyoto.

Went during autumn. The garden is amazingly beautiful. Both of us agreed that this is our favourite of all. Sitting at the tatami enjoying the peace and beautiful sand and maples.
