- Martina1888Inverness, United Kingdom506 contributionsMaruyama ParkIt's a nice park in Kyoto but at the time I visited it was extremely crowded and I had to be careful not to trip over people taking selfies. But if you walk a bit further up, the people lessen. Great to have a picnic or just a little rest. Lots of benches and some toilets as well.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 1 November 2023
- hfot2 🌸🍁🌸Vermont7,604 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit during sakura seasonAs always, we stop by Maruyama to check out our old friend, the glorious Gion shidare-zakura, weeping cherry tree. We had read somewhere that the tree was not in the best of health, but, nonetheless, it did look spectacular the day we visited. The crowds were there enjoying hanami under the trees and the egret was in the pond just as it always is. The tourists in their rental kimonos could get in the way of our photographing, but mostly they were opting to take selfies, as always. It’s wonderful to return after 3 years away (COVID) and find things as we remember them to be.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 January 2024
- msa23_2000Chino Hills, California1,455 contributionsBest cherry blossom viewingThis is a small park around a pond. The downside is lots of vendors. I went on a rainy afternoon so it wasn’t too crowded. The cherry blossoms were magnificent. I really enjoyed just walking around the pond. It’s not a very large space.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 3 April 2024

Many food vendors cooking and serving up a variety of food. So much going on and to take in it was very enjoyable.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 April 2024

There is a huge sakura tree in the park that is incredibly impressive. The tree and the park are well lighted at night and combined with numerous food stalls create a festive environment.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 April 2024

I visited on a tour. The cherry blossoms had just started blooming, so it was a little lonely. I went there first thing in the morning, so many of the stalls were still closed. There was a shop selling grilled bamboo shoots, which was unusual. It is a familiar symbol of Gion.

For those who, following one of the itineraries proposed by the tourist guides, want to visit the entire south-eastern part of historic Kyoto in a single day, including temples such as Shoren-in, Chion-in, Kodai-ji and others, as well as the evocative Nene streets -no-michi, Nined-zaka and Sannen-zaka (it's worth it, although the ascent of the latter is tiring and the crowds to weave through are sometimes a little unnerving), a stop, if you're not an aspiring triathlon champions or happy twenty-year-olds, it is mandatory. And the Maruyama park, which practically acts as a link to what has been mentioned, is suitable for the need: large, with beautiful corners and pleasant vegetation. You will probably find it crowded, especially in the summer, but the space is large enough to guarantee an appropriate and well-deserved moment of break.

Lovely park to stroll around for night hanami, but stay away from the foodstands (mediocre at best). There are quiet areas with cherry blossoms if you want to get away from the crowds.

Very good place to visit during spring. The park have a variety of cherry trees with different beautiful colors, besides, there is a river passing through the park with nice waterfalls.

Come here for the blossoms and be surrounded by many having social parties around the prettiest time of the year.
Not exactly sure what it would look like throughout the other seasons.
Many a food stall (and safe to eat street food) along the way.
Highly recommend a visit- and free!

Quite possibly the best park we saw the cherry blossom season on our travel. A lovely way to see the locals celebrate the season with parties and great food. A great experience especially at sunset. A must do.

If you’re into shopping, parks, and the energy of a city, visit Maruyama Park. I recommend visiting during both the day and night. Admission is free to the park. If you visit at night, it’s quiet and romantic with the lanterns lit up. During the day, the city is vibrant and there’s nearby shopping to partake in or traditional market to enjoy.

It’s a pretty nice park and has a few shrines in or around it. Definitely a little creepy at night though, wife and I took a stroll and decided to leave. Lol
