Address
Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

    Quite incredible
For 'just' a station. It is worth a trip in its own right. The architecture is one thing then there are the shops and restaurants, the escalators and all those stairs. They all lead up to the terrace for a look down into the station and a bit of a view out. There is also a glass sided walkway to more restaurants. Go after dark and the stairs will perform for you - great light show

More impressive in person than it was in pictures
The building was even more impressive in person than it was in pictures. I loved the modern design and the huge glass atrium that allowed natural light to flood into the building. The observation deck was also a great highlight, and I had a wonderful view of the city from up there. The shops and restaurants in the building were also great, and I ended up spending a lot of my time there.

    The Kyoto station is HUGE!
The Kyoto station is absolutely huge. Kind of crazy with all the people going in so many directions. Information booths are there to assist where you want to go. It’s also immaculate. There are no garbage receptacles but there isn’t any littering. Plenty of good shops offering food and wares. Information booths are there for assistance. Very kind and patient help! Interesting, there’s no graffiti either!

    Amazing but hectic.
Kyoto Station itself is chaotic; and intense; but with fabulous architecture. Escalators that literally travel upwards of 12 levels; and a view from the top, to bottom, which is amazing. Anyhow, even though the hotel was quite close by - it took us about 30 minutes to find it lol. Far too many underground corridors to easily get lost in.

Very kind and helpful staff here!
I felt overwhelmed when I got out of my Shinkansen Train here. It was too crowded and everybody seemed to be rushing. At the Information Desk, an old man, speaking perfect English explained to me about the Day Pass, cost of tickets, where to wait for my bus outside, etc. This attraction is not only good for train services, but also for bus services. Outside, in front of it are Bus Stops for visiting local attractions of Kyoto. There are shops, restaurants, ATM, ticket machines, etc. at this station.

First, I think this is a train station. A huge building and it is very busy. There are a number of shops available from shopping to food.

Kyoto Station offers you an array of trains (from Shinkansen to local trains) and shops / restaurants. Nicely managed and neatly landscaped.

Massive complex with multiple areas of restaurants and shops. Oh yeah, they also have some trains coming and going! We found the layout very confusing and the signage very poor. Almost impossible to find restaurants you're looking for.

You will probably pass by. Nice place to eat and visit the surroundings. Kyoto tower is just a few blocks away.

Ramen Street on 10th floor escalators are in the store named Isetan on the left just before you reach the steps at the end of the main south to north concourse inside Kyoto main station - saw lots of people puzzling over their phones - best Ramen since Busan!!

The Kyoto station is gigantic and has all the trimmings of a central metro station. Finding gates etc is all straight forward enough. The core business however - the actual rail services, are quite frustrating. An IC (icoca) card is the closest to our oyster / tap and go type card and in retrospect is fairly easy to get on apple wallet (works on buses too!). However there are so many exceptions, lines that need another card or in the case of Nara a second ticket needed. Having visited New York, London and Paris in the last 10 years, I am shocked how far behind the Japanese rail system is compared to these many years ago in terms of ease of use. And there are further issues - like needing your child’s passport to purchase their IC card? The lack of English language translations also limits you.
