Calm beautiful temple and Gardens. Even though it was close to town it was very secluded and well kept. It is well worth a visit

Next … off to visit Chion-In (~17th century) which was very impressive. A Buddhist ceremony was occurring and we were fortunate to sit and listen / watch. Was good.

Chion-in Temple is a Kyoto gem! The grand Sanmon gate and imposing stairs create a majestic entrance. The vast grounds offer a serene escape, and witnessing the priests' chanting of nembutsu adds a spiritual touch. Take your time to explore and absorb the profound atmosphere, making it a truly special and memorable experience in Japan.

We stumbled upon this active temple while walking through the area. We were able to witness a Buddhist prayer session and the temple was beautiful too.

Chion-in temple is very striking, partly because of its scale. Walking to the top offers some super views.

It is a very short walk from Gion and it is equally easy to combine it with Shoren-in, which is only a few minutes’ walk away.

I came here during the their autumn leaves illumination event (2022). Admission was 800JPY but you can get 100JPY off if you follow them on a social media platform. I really like this area of Kyoto at night and to have something specifically geared toward night activities is a nice find. The lighting is great and while I was there they had a monk live a brief 20 minute presentation (all in Japanese).

This large temple complex is the headquarters of the Jodo-shu sect, occupying prime real estate on the mountain next to Maruyama gardens. It's a working temple marked by an imposing gate - when i visited on a rainy summer day, the believers significantly outnumbered the tourists (all 3 of us). Historically, this was the home temple of Ieasu Tokugawa. Worth visiting.

Chion-in Temple is one of the main highlights in Kyoto which (in my opinion) should not be miss. This Temple is absolutely worth visiting. However itcan get too crowded during the day. So I recommen, for the sake of good photos, to see this place in an early morning.

I am not particularly knowledgeable about this temple and can't say much about the history or distinctiveness of it in comparison to other sights in Kyoto, but what struck me about it was the incredible steps that led up to it. We visited the landmark on a walking tour, recommended by lonely planet and enjoyed the entire area around it. The temple as such was majestic and another still standing symbol of Japanese craftsmanship, but it were the stairs and the bell that stuck with me, now, reminding myself of it about one year later.
