It is the headquarters of Shingon sect. Chishaku-in is a big temple in Higashiyama area, but strangely there are not many foreign tourists. To enter the premises is free. But if you go there, I recommend you to visit its beautiful garden and see the paintings of Hasegawa Tohaku. One of his paintings is a national treasure. It is absolutely worth paying the entrance.

I finally wanted to see what was behind the wall with the wooden barrier on what seemed the main gate. I walked to the side street and found a wonderful complex of two temples. Quiet and right in the middle of the city.

I went to this temple because I was interested in visiting the head temple of the Shinzan ha, Shingon Sect popular in Kanto Region. The Screen Door Paintings by Tohaku Hasegawa and his son and disciples are awesome. No wonder they are National Treasures. Looking at the Japanese garden I enjoy relaxing time for a while.

For me, the main draw of the Chishakuin is the lack of crowds. Here, you can sit on the veranda and admire the rear tea garden, and let the world hurry by. Nice azeleas too, if you are visiting in May. Glad I stopped by.

Kept coming back to the painted screen panels in the Kodo Hall and facing garden as for choosing which one or two temples we had in the short six hours touring Kyoto. Beautiful golden painted blossoms meditation room and facing garden

One of many excellent temples and shrines that are open to the public. Many historically point and one that symbolizes what attracts Westerners to Japan.

Chishaku-in is one of the most peaceful Japanese gardens in Kyoto usually without mobs of tourists, rare in Kyoto, its pond garden is BEAUTIFUL. Chishaku-in has been listed in "Hidden Gardens of Japan" - THE photo essay and reference for finding unspoiled gardens in Japan (minus the tour bus crowds) available on Amazon US and Amazon Japan.

Relatively close to all the other more popular places like Kiyomizu-dera and Sanju sangendo, Chishaku-in is quiet and less crowded. However, this is a must go to place if you love gardens, artwork and beautifully mainted temple interiors. Next to this temple, there is a temple lodging that you can also stay, for a reasonable price (in a superb location!). For more, please search "hiddenjapanguide" on the web.

Garden of the temple is not very big but beautiful, and 15th century painting (national treasure of Japan) was masterpiece.
This temple operates inn. If you use the inn, you can experience morning chanting and have special guided tour of its garden and paintings.

This is another interesting temple, with old painting, in a beautiful setting. Once again, the grounds were the star of the site.
