We loved to visit this temple as it was not crowded so we could enjoy it calmly. The neighborhood is also very nice to walk around.

We visited this temple at the same time as Fushimi Inari-Taisha Shrine and were glad we did - in fact, we preferred it to the shrine (partly as the shrine is packed). It's big and beautiful and was one of the temples that stood out as a favourite (which is saying something given how many we saw in Kyoto!).

Great temple, central, close to town. Beautiful at this time of year with the cherry blossoms- easy to get to. Recommend this as your starter temple :)

Beautiful old temples and gardens. We had an excellent guide with us. I'm not sure that it'd be as interesting without a guide. It's particularly colourful in Autumn. Today it rained and not too many cherry blossoms so not at its best in April

The gardens around the Hojo were beautiful. The subtemples are hard to find; Google Maps and Ulmon maps were of little help since they either had names in Japanese or did not name them at all. So, we missed most of the sub-temples due to logistical problems. You’ll need to prepare in advance to find them. Blessedly free of the... More

I walked to the temple after leaving fushimi Inari which was completely flooded with tourists and made it unbearable for me. Tofuku-ji was a breath of fresh air. The ambience was one of complete peace. I had a fun time wandering around the expansive grounds and felt like I had stepped back in time. There are two gardens that cost... More

Monty don visited these gardens and mentioned that they were unique as they broke with tradition. Contains a rock garden as well, which is also unique as it has rocks on their side. Lots to walk around and see, get there early and its very quiet and peaceful.

Having visited Fushimi Inari Taisha earlier in the morning, this was the second half of our tour of South-East Kyoto. It's a thirty minute walk (or one train stop) from that attraction and was a welcome change from the huge crowds earlier that day. There are some beautiful wooden walkways and canopies linking up the various temples and moss/rock gardens.... More

Staying in Southern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Southern Kyoto
Southern Kyoto has a reserved air. Though the Fushimi Inari Shrine is one of Kyoto's major tourist attractions, the surrounding nature, parks, gardens, temples, and shrines provide less-visited spaces for strolling and reflection. The Fushimi Inari Shrine itself is made up of 32,000 sub-shrines, and the mountain they are dotted across beckons hikers, picnickers, and lovers of the outdoors. Many of the mountain's off-set paths aren't frequented by tourists, and the mountain's serenity can be enjoyed at a leisurely pace. Southern Kyoto is the place to enjoy being outside, and to pay your respects to the ancient architecture and gods of the land that are celebrated here.
