Great Restaurant Upstairs and Great Grocery Store Downstairs
5.0 of 5 bubblesDec 2019
We visited the Kyoto Yaoichi for the first time. We were there mainly to have dinner at their rooftop restaurant called Savory, and ended up going to the grocery store downstairs on our way out also. The place is located on Higashinotoin-dori, just north of Rokkaku-dori. It is just one block east of Karasuma-dori, behind the Ikenobo building. It is about 10 min. walk from the Karasuma Oike subway station. It is a 3? story building with a fairly large grocery store on the first floor, another prepared foods/dried goods, etc. store on the second, and the Savory restaurant on the rooftop. We went there on a weeknight around 6 PM without a reservation, and we were seated upon arrival. The decor of the restaurant is pleasantly simple with a lot of wood and glass. The tables are essentially butch-block wood. The service was relatively casual with not that many waitstaff, but it was not a problem since the place was not that crowded when we were there. I saw about 30 or so tables there, some of them facing a rooftop vegetable garden which was illuminated for us to view at night. The menu at Savory is very heavy on vegetables. The Japanese are very serious about vegetables, and Kyoto people are more so about their quality. The menu is vegetable-centric, and I am sure a vegetarian/vegan could have an good meal there, but there were a lot of carnivorous choices (beef, chicken, duck, and fish) as part of a set menu or as a la carte. We both had the 5,000 JPY seven? course menu that included Kyoto beef from Kameoka. Getting an even half-decent multi-course dinner in downtown Kyoto is an excellent deal, and we thought this was an outstanding value proposition. Everything, both the plethora of seasonal vegetables, many from Kyoto, some from elsewhere as well as a very tasty beef steak, were beautifully presented. Service was very good. Even the dessert was made from unusual vegetables. This is an outstanding dining choice for western-style (French??) farm-to-table dinner with lots of fresh and unusual vegetables. We will definitely make a point of going back there again. Highly recommended. If you like vegetables, this is a "must go" place for a very reasonably priced dinner in downtown Kyoto.

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

I had, hands down, one of the best meals of my life at the restaurant upstairs and I’ve been thinking about it since. I have no idea how/when I’ll recreate the experience there since there’s nothing quite like this in the U.S. that I’ve seen. Everything from the stuffed zucchini to the salad to the shashimi was incredible. Enjoy, enjoy!

Food materials are fresh and prepared food choices are plenty. When you are tired of eating outside, this supermarket offers a good alternative for your stomach and purse. Also, there is a bakery with small eating space. Sometimes, I have a snack of coffee and doughnut, They are good and reasonably priced, only 400 yen.

Although this shop is a little expensive for regular groceries, it has a great selection of prepared food, both western and Japanese. I've picked up dinner here several times when I've been in Kyoto. It also has decent fruit.

We had lunch at the restaurant on the third floor. The food was delicious and made with natural vegetables. We were satisfied with the meal, but there is one thing we would like to ask. There are no handrails on the stairs and steps leading to the third floor. We also felt that the steps should be marked with colors or taping that are easy for the visually impaired to see, to prevent accidents caused by staggering and falling. We would like the restaurant to be considerate of people with disabilities, not just young people who are able to move around energetically. If the stairs were turned into a ramp, wheelchairs could pass through! Take measures before an accident occurs!
