Neighbourhood: Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.

As mentioned elsewhere, this is a nice place to visit if you're interested in a quiet stop away from the bustle of the bigger attractions.

Beautiful stop during our tour with our Ebisuya Rickshaw driver. Walked around the peaceful gardens. We were the only ones there. Amazing for busy Kyoto. Our guide told us about the story of the two Samurai men who fought and are buried there. Very interesting.

I visited the Seiryoji Reihokan Museum during the Spring Special Opening of Kyoto's Private Cultural Properties in Spring 2024. Inside the Shoin study, which is on special display, Tani Bunchu's Four Seasons Flowers and Birds (Eight Panels) can only be viewed from the corridor, so unfortunately I was unable to fully appreciate it. Meanwhile, the Tanshoan Teahouse appears to be a copy of the Omotesenke Hisada family teahouse, which was used by General Nogi Maresuke and was originally located in Kyoto City and was relocated here. I don't know much about teahouses, but I was impressed by the exterior, which I had never seen before.

I was totally disappointed with this stop. It was 500 yen to enter and the gardens weren't well kept, the sand gardens were a mess and there were leaves and twigs and such everywhere. I wouldn't waste my time and go again...

It is called Hokyoin. It is also a Rinzai sect temple. I visited it during the Spring Kyoto Private Cultural Properties Opening Special Event [Saturday, April 27th, 2024 - Sunday, May 12th, 2024]. This was the first time it was open to the public. In addition to the main hall and garden, armor, sliding door paintings, and the teahouse are on special display.
On Thursday, May 9th, 13:00-13:30, the head priest, Suita Kazumitsu, gave a lecture on "Hokyoin and Zen Buddhism." One talk that was particularly memorable was the talk on "Kakunen Musho." He explained that in the absolutely unchanging world of Shinnyo, there is no clear distinction between ordinary people and saints.

I visited on November 25th. It's been about 5 or 6 years since my last visit. I haven't been to Seiryoji Temple recently. The leaves have changed color quite a bit, but there are still a lot of orange leaves. It will probably take a while for the leaves to turn bright red.
