The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.

I would say this is a must-visit for anyone travelling by train to Kyoto. It is a few minute walk from the station and so worth it. You can go inside, and although you should not take pictures, it is absolutely gorgeous. Brown wooden walls with stunning gold and white lanterns - it is a great place to be spiritual. When I visited, the yellow leaves matched the golden fabric of the building. It was absolutely magnificent. I spent around forty minutes simply admiring the interiors of these two spaces and it is a cherished memory, already.

Only a short walk from its western counterpart Nishi Hongan-ji. I recommend visiting both while in the area because each has its own merits. And there were no crowds.

We visited Higashi Hongan-ji temple; a Buddhist temple comprising of vast wooden structures. It was huge and Yes, it was ‘shoes off again’ as we entered for a look around.

One of the lesser visited temples in Kyoyo, it would seem, yet very much worthwhile. Well-kept and impressive. Entrance free.

Our taxi driver dropped us off here while he waited. It was near closing time so we had to rush. The massive scale of this temple is quite impressive. The decor is beautiful and you really have a sense of awe when you are inside. The grounds are extensive as well so there are several things to see. There is also a small gift shop near the entrance. It's worth a visit if you have time.

We saw this temple from the taxi taking
us to our hotel. We later walked back to
see the temple complex

Many interesting buildings, a huge green
bell, and a great drinking fountain, featuring
a fearsome looking dragon.

One of two temple sites, this is the eastern
temple. The other, Nishi Hongonji, the
western temple is a short distance away.

Both worth a visit.

The wooden structures were pretty cool. I'd recommend not missing either the Amidadomon Gate & the KikunomonGate. Both gates were wonderful.

The complex is huge. There are not clear signages. We did not have too much fun in here. Perhaps a tour would be nice!

There were many locals who looked at us funny. They smirked at us. We know not why. It was a not properly cleaned complex.
