So many great bars and restaurants tucked in a very cool alley. You could go there every night for a week and barely scratch the surface. Great Jazz. Water front seating. If walking down cool side streets is your thing, this your place.

We happened on Pontocho on our way home from Gion one night. Our 9yr old daughter was dressed in her yukata, obi etc and fitted in very well - getting many cries of "Kawaii" from Japanese and tourists alike. Pontocho is a maze of vibrant,...More

At night it's a riot of colour, smells and sounds. Great restraunts and bars, views over river。can be expensive and not too much western food. Walking it was most fun

A traditional japanese street lined with lots of small restaurants specializing in various dishes. A nice street to have a wander through at night time.

Real romantic place for couples in the evening time. Lots of bars and restaurants alongside this small street. I find the actual prices highly overcharged though. Nevertheless the scenery is priceless. It´s really an evening activity.

There are lots of tourists walking the area and some interesting places to see and visit but the sight of geisha flitting through the side streets is almost like spotting wild creatures in their natural habitat. But quite exciting to see these lovely ladies.

I had read about this zone and needed rest and good food after a full day of shrines and temples. I wasn't disappointed, its long narrow passage with tons of little places some cheap some very expensive. I found a Japanese pub / draft beer...More

Though small by comparison, Pontocho is one of Kyoto's
most spirited and memorable neighborhoods. A narrow
street straddling the Kamogawa River, it is Kyoto's
busiest nightlife spot. When darkness falls,
Pontocho's many signs and lanterns bolt to life,
making the area glow with invitations to passers-by to
come inside and pull up a chair. Its restaurants and
bars sprawl onto the riverbank, providing a friendly
