En is a small Japanese-style teahouse in the Gion area of Kyoto. You can enjoy an authentic tea ceremony experience first hand. Tea ceremony (the way of tea) is one of Japan's traditional cultural practices, and is a name given to an art that synthesizes the preparation and drinking of tea together with spirituality, history, architecture, the appreciation of handmade tea utensils. En offers a participatory introduction to Japanese tea ceremony for everyone to enjoy!

We were so impressed with this experience. The two Japanese ladies were knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. They explained the ceremony, demonstrated it (with such elegance and grace) and then helped us make our own cups of matcha. A thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile experience! (Helps if...More

This is a simple yet beautiful experience demonstrating the elegance of a host in a Tea Ceremony. After the demonstration and explanation you are invited to make your own tea - to practice the skills shown. Our host was respectful and the process one of...More

I obsessed about where we should have our tea ceremony and picked En which was a great choice. The two ladies who conducted the service were friendly, interactive and informative. It was far more complicated of a ritual than I expected and had an elegance...More

We went with a group, and were welcomed by an unpleasant host who made it all clear it was about the money. Commercial attitude where one group after the other joins the ceremony. You get a what you get pretty much everywhere else, meaning the...More

I thought this was very cool to see the tradition and learn about Japanese tea ceremony's. I didn't feel rushed as others mentioned. It's crazy how meticulous the ceremony host has to be!

We had an excellent time at the tea ceremony and I disagree with the comments that suggest it is bad value for money. The tea ceremony is usually only practiced with close family and friends and is an invitation only event so we felt it...More

Giving it 2 starts only because of the ladies conducting the ceremony, who were very polite, helpful and tried to demonstrate and explain the meaning of the tea ceremony and how it plays a part in Japanese culture. The rest of the experience deserves no...More
