I have visited Shimyoin knowing Kukai, Zen master, legend and must of all out to see where the origin of Kamo River lays.
It does not disappoint, the place has character and a strong spiritual vibe you can only find in real Japanese temples out in the country side but not at the city center where they look like amusement parks.
This place can only be reached by car, it is far, deep in the mountain and once there you will find a Zen humble temple displaying simple ancient shrines with a gigantic religious cultural history.
Go there to find nature and Zen, not to be amused by triviality, oh, and there’s also a small steep hike, not the best if you are injured or cannot climb stone steps.
I understand the poor rates if you are not aware what Shimyoin stands for but to anyone aware of Kukai and anyone who have seen the majestic scenery of the Kamo River this place must be visited.
