I took this night-time Geisha tour of Gion upon arriving in Kyoto about two weeks ago. This tour took you through the Gion district and outside important sites of cultural geisha significance (various teahouses, geisha houses, etc.) While the tour was informative (and the guide very knowledgeable), I found it to be very boring, focusing mainly on pictures from a... We did the 5 hour walking tour. Walking was easy and our guide gave us good insights into life in Kyoto as well as pointing out a heap of things we hadn't noticed on our own unguided walks. For 2000 yen I reckon this is a good value tour.

I just completed this night walking tour and can't speak highly enough about it. Great guide with great English ability and full of information about Geiko and Maiko life. I travel extensively and am pretty skeptical about group tours -- this one was great value and absolutely a fascinating fun learning experience. Go!

Decided to go on the walking tour of Gion in Kyoto and was not disappointed. Mia was the guide. She was very informative and funny. The close to two hour tour went by in a breeze. Wish it was even longer actually. Very atmospheric and we were fortunate to see a few Geiko and Maiko. Definitely recommend.

Tbh, given the cost of this tour, I was expecting this to be sub-standard. However our guide Mia was brilliant. Her English was excellent, her knowledge was A1, she had a good sense of humour and was very happy to answer any questions. Highly recommended.

Mie Tamada was our tour guide on this tour. We were 2 families with 6 children of varying ages. Her English was excellent and her knowledge of Kyota and Japan was very impressive. She made the trip interesting for everyone and was our best guide over our two week vacation.

Wonderful tour with Mie around Gion at night. She was very knowledgeable and very funny. We learnt a lot about Maiko and Geiko, and about Japan generally. You're not guaranteed to see Maiko but Mie knew the right spots and we were lucky! Highly recommended.

Our very friendly and knowledgable guide took us round the Gion district for 2 hours. Interesting stories and details about the life of Maikos and Geikos, and excellent English spoken. Good value.

We did a long day of walking tours with Ellie for the 5 hour day time tour and Mie for the Night Walk in Gion. Both tours were terrific and very different. The price for both tours was amazingly affordable - just $20 for the 5 hour day tour! Ellie gave us the most complete explanation of the differences between... More

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
