We took the JR train to Umahori, walked for about 10 minutes, and took the Sagano Romantic Train back to the Arashiyama Station (the second from the end) so that we could walk through the bamboo forest. This train is not romantic, but it is...More

The Sagano Romantic train will give you a great view of the scenic landscape along the Horu-Gawa River. As seats are limited, you will have to book in advance at JR Kyoto Station. We were in Osaka so we reserved our tickets in advance at...More

If you want to explore the scenic gorges along the river, try to take the Sagano Romantic Train ride. The station was located right next to JR Arashiyama Station. You could also take a boat ride back if you want to get two separate experiences...More

This was a nice break to take during the day. It goes along the river and has some beautiful views. We went in December and sat in "heated" (or not so heated) car one way and in the open air car the other way. It...More

The train is anything but romantic however if you can grin & bear it and pay to get the boat back then I think it's worth a look. The boat takes about 1.5 hours and passes some gorgeous scenery- some of it doesn't look real-...More

Perhaps not romantic but a nice sightseeing trip along the Hozu River. The Sakura season was almost over when I rode but still it was fun and the sights were nice. I think the fall colors would have been nice to see on this train...More

Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best
eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved
Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji
Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea
houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the
riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature
lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The
area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and

Is this romantic train usually fully booked? I am just afraid that I'll miss the train if I buy ticket in advance with fixed timing. So, if I just buy it once I get right at the station, is there a good chance that it's still available? Well, I'll go there on Sunday.

I was there during Sakura season and got a ticket, but I waited in line before their office opened. The seats are assigned so if you buy advanced tickets you are guaranteed your spot.

The one way fare is 620 yen (adult fare) and 310 yen for children. That is for the train only. You can get to the Saga-Arashiyama JR station from Kyoto, then a very short walk to Saga Torokko station to get the Scenic train... More

Hi, two questions: 1. What if I purchase the Sagano scenic railway ticket in advance, eg. For 1.07pm timing, but I missed the train. Will I be able to board the next train at 2.07pm? Or do I need to repurchase the ticket? 2. The last Hozugawa river boat ride will be at 3.30pm, do you think there'll be sufficient time if I were to board the Sagano Scenic Railway from Saga Torokko Station at 2.07pm to Saga Kameoka Station, then take a 20mins bus to the river boat boarding point? Thank you very much!
