About
Kyoto International Manga Museum opened its doors on November, 2006, as a joint venture between the city of Kyoto and Kyoto Seika University’s Faculty of Manga. It is the first comprehensive cultural facility in Japan that combines the functions of manga museum and library. The building it is based in is a re-purpose elementary school that was built in the early Showa era. The museum holds over 300,000 manga materials, ranging from foreign to historic manga. About 50,000 of these are accessible to visitors on book shelves that run throughout the entire museum, from the first floor to the third, the “Wall of Manga.”Near the entrance of the museum, there is a "Manga Expo" corner, where about 5,000 manga translated into languages other than Japanese and foreign comics are exhibited. In the main gallery, we answer the question "What is Manga?" in our permanent exhibition, which explains the systematic and historical aspects of the manga industry. In addition, we have some events.

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

As other reviewers have pointed out, this feels more like a library than a museum. There's a small permanent exhibition about the history of manga and some changing exhibitions. The rest is basically just a building full of manga. You can read outside on the lawn or on the countless chairs inside the museum. The selection of translated works is tiny, especially compared to the Japanese ones. I still found it worthwhile and spent time reading and strolling through the exhibitions.

It aroused my curiosity to read in several Trips Blogs that called it one of Kyoto’s Top-rated Museums, or at least the Most Recommended.
NOT A MUSEUM, but a comic library or a playhouse, with many spaces for children.
It's what we're gonna find for 1200 yen entry, hopefully some temporary exhibition.
But let no one expect an expository historical discourse on the very rich and varied trajectory of Japanese drawing and its influences. Too bad.

There are an incredible number of mangas spread over 3 floors and you can read them all. There is also a small selection from other countries and languages.
There is a room with information boards showing the creation, history and facts of the mangas.
Sometimes there are workshops on drawing mangas. And a mangaka draws you as a manga character.

Looks more like a gigantic manga library. We expected to find more explanations about the techniques used, and Fun Things to do. Only the small computer at the entrance finally played this role.
Very nice point to highlight though: a lady realizes your portrait (up to 4 people on the same drawing) in manga, and that is a great memory of Japan! (Attention is quickly full for the day, better go in the morning. Costs about 20€ in addition to the Award of the museum ticket).

There are various manga from all over the world, past and present. I think they cover almost all Japanese manga. You can read them all, so once you start reading, time just flies by. It's nice to be able to lie down on the grass and read for as long as you like.

Great visit! This is a wonderful stop if you have anyone in your party who is remotely interested in Manga. We spent 1-2 hours there, worth the entrance fee. We all learned great, factual information. Not a huge museum, but able to read manga from multiple time periods. Lovely shop as well. Great for a variety of ages.

This is a library with some exhibits and the occasional activity. As someone who wanted to learn more about manga, I left super disappointed. The "museum", as others have said, is essentially a Japanese manga book library. People were sitting everywhere just reading the mangas. The main exhibit/gallery had the most information about the history of mangas, but it took 15 minutes to walk around. They have smaller gallery rooms with exhibits (such as a room with plaster casts of artists' hands, and a showcase of a specific manga artist). If you are really into manga, and can read Japanese, go. Otherwise, skip it. There are much more worthwhile things to see and do in Kyoto.

This is not a museum, it is a library of manga books which you can sit and read either inside or outside(weather permitting) on bean bags on the artificial lawn. If you like manga and have time to kill that’s great. But if you go here (like I did with my family) expecting to see manga art you will be disappointed. Paying 1200Y (my wife wisely remained outside) left a bad taste in my mouth.

A chance random visit and could have spent all day here because I LOOOVE the genre. A rabbit warren of a museum were every room shared a little more. Could have spent hours in the library but if time-starved even just the history of this art form is interesting. Highlight was later in the week (visited Thursday) they host local maunga artists in residence who for a (what I thought was a little cheap) couple of hundred yen can create you an original maunga portrait. Had thought the other half would have been a little bored so was on an afternoon without but to my delight, she was so talented even included him from a couple of photos on my phone and a couple of questions. Portrait now sits pride and place in my house - such a precious keep sake from my travels!

It is a squeaking (literally, the flooring is terrible) library of a japanese manga books. If you are not into reading manga books in Japanese, DO NOT GO. There is nothing else in this "museum" other than book shelves.
