I went to Takao for a day trip hiking. The whole area is nice for a slow stroll, the other 2 temples are quite worthy of visiting. I have visited 90% of the major temples in Kyoto area, they are all beautiful each in its own way, I really don't prefer to rate them, esp. in lower range. It costs... More

We came to this rather remote temple in northwest Kyoto on a Sunday morning by JR Bus which we boarded near the Ryoan-ji. After getting off the bus at the stop located inside a parking lot, we turned around to find a small footpath leading up the mountain to the temple. In total contrast to the crowded tourist attractions in... More

Kozanji is a UNESCO World heritage site located in the hills near Mount Takao. It boasts of the very first tea plantation in Japan and a set of scrolls featuring animals parodying human activities, said to be the first example of manga. Very interesting and serene place. A bit hard to get to but if you like peace and quiet... More

Such a beautiful bus ride into the countryside. We also were very proud of ourselves that we were able to navigate the public transit, with the help of a local attraction magazine that gave very good directions. We received this magazine at the tourist info room in the train station. You must stop by! The temple and grounds were gorgeous... More

500 yen entry fee during autumn leaves season, another 600 yen to the 1 lone Japanese tiny building with the oldest manga (the Unesco World Heritage Site). We didnt pay to enter this as it just looks like not much to pay 600 yen for. Took us 30 min to finish walking around, without entering the Unesco designated site. Autumn... More

There's a steep entry fee of 500 yen to the grounds and another 600 yen to see the so called first Japanese manga. Overrated because it's just a couple of old buildings - many of which you can't enter, that's strewn around a forest. The buildings are old but are not stunning structurally. The so called first Japanese manga is... More
