Within the Kyoto Imperial Palace complex lies the Sento Palace, complete with its own garden. We registered for the tour to both palaces and garden, and I thought Sento was slightly better, smaller but with more to view. It snowed lightly when we did the...More

You can only visit the garden by applying for a 'permit'. Do apply early as the number of visitors is limited. Plan your visit well as it is quite a long walk from the subway station. We were late and had to end up running...More

Because Sento Imperial Palace, located in Kyoto-gyoen, is a very quiet place, it seems to forget what in Kyoto city. There are also applications on the day, but it is difficult to see foreign travelers who stay for a short period of time. I recommend...More

A drag that you need a reservation and there are many better gardens in Kyoto. Still worth the (little) trouble though.

If you can't get into the palace itself the large surrounding gardens/parks are nice but definitely not worth it. Unless you want to take a nap, then they're great.

Walked from Nijo castle and had originally planned to visit the Kyoto Imperial Palace. Should have done my research, as you can only enter the Imperial Palace grounds under a guided tour (Imperial Park itself didn't require one) which required booking in advance. When I...More

City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its
blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered
shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street
bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to
peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home
goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center
is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and
