Southern Higashiyama has a number of lovely traditional streets but this was by far my favourite. Not only are the buildings and path itself very beautiful but it is much quieter than those lined with shops. It was lovely to walk down. One thing is that there's a lot of "no camera" signs there although they seemed to be largely... More

Lovely place to visit to experience old Kyoto. Be considerate, people live here and request no photos on their doorstep. Lovely walk

The neighbourhood were this streets ends is a very nice neighbourhood to visit, absolutely recommended area. Then the best way to start your visit would be entering through this street that ends up in the middle of another street from where you can visit the temples and other interesting places. For example Ryozen Shrine, several buddahs you can touch for... More

Very easy to miss and fantastic to find, this is one of the most magical streets in Kyoto. It felt like walking back in time. At sunset, I captured the most beautiful photos and I went back after dark to see the street lit by soft lamplight. Be respectful of the fact that some of the houses are residential and... More

Not only is this a place of great historical value but as we exited Ishibe Alley we saw a Geisha get out of a taxi and walk off down a path with what looked like some sort of Chaperone! If you go Geisha hunting this might be your best bet

Ishibe Koji(Alley) is a small traditional beautiful alley which you have better see between Kiyomizu-dera and Yasaka Shrine. When you come from Kiyomizu-dera, walk through Sannen-zaka and Ninen-zaka slopes, see Yasaka Pagoda, and then before Kodaiji temple, turn left into Ishibe Koji. There are nice teahouses and restaurants serving Japanese cuisines.

Ishibe is a small alley between Yasaka shrine and Kiyomizudera. If you are walking here, take this way! You may need an accurate map on paper or on your mobile to find it, but it is worth a small detour. There are some teahouses here that may provide you a peaceful moment in a beautiful setting, but we did not... More

Traditional street which is really fun to walk through. Beautiful old wooden houses. Great opportunity for taking pictures and the best thing about it: no other tourists!!!!

We stumbled upon this quite by accident really. We were looking for a place to eat but apparently were there a bit early. Everything was closed pretty much like this picture.
