About
Kyoto, Higashiyama. Furukawacho Shopping Arcade was once called the east Nishiki and flourished. From that era, it has become a retro shopping street that continues to carefully cherishes connections with people, and you would feel it has the same relaxing atmosphere as before. Since customers and shopkeepers are mostly acquaintances, are they shopping or just talking? Such a scene is the daily life of the Furukawacho shopping Arcade. It's not a place where everything is available, but please come and visit to the Furukawamachi shopping street, and touch a real Japanese life in Kyoto.

Neighbourhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

It is a small shopping arcade near Subway Higashiya station. Actually it is the facility of shopping for the local people, but since it is close to some tourist destinations, now many foreigners also come to visit here. On the day I was there, many shops are closed due to new year’s holiday.

The store is based on the concept of retro, which is also seen in movies and TV dramas, and as soon as you step inside you'll find a nostalgic feel fused with the latest design.

This was our second visit to this historical shopping arcade in Kyoto - the first in 2019 when we did a guided walk from the arcade. We returned in 2022, and actually stayed at a tiny Inn (OKI's Inn) within the arcade. The shopkeepers here are very much a 'family' who work hard together to retain the arcade's history and charm in the face of big shopping centres. It is walking distance to Gion. While we were there, we attended one of their regular festivals and weekend markets within the arcade. Lots of handmade locally produced products are available.

Furukawacho Shopping Arcade

Kyoto

Character arcade.

This is a great little old shopping arcade in the historical Shirakawa area of Kyoto - a neighbouring suburb to the more famous Gion, and an interesting place to explore. It's also surrounded by some other great shops and cafes. Not a big tourist area .. I don't know why as it's easily as interesting as Gion, without the visitor crowds!
