We had just visited the Kiyomizu Temple and were walking through the Higashiyama area of Kyoto. I happened to look down an alley to my left and saw many colorful balls, hanging like garlands from a hut-like structure. When we went to investigate, I had no idea what was going on. The small area at the end of the alley was filled with Japanese writing on individual balls and then putting them on the hut or other places nearby. Tremendously curious, I went to an information counter here.
This turned out to be a small temple for the Koshin faith. The temple is dedicated to a guardian warrior and three wise monkeys. The round ball-shaped cloth talismans, in every conceivable color, represent the monkeys. Worshipers write a wish on the ball, known as a kukurizaru, and then hang it for help in losing a bad desire and getting a wish granted.
We watched all the activity for a while and I noted some young women arriving in kimonas to take photos of each other with the balls as a most colorful backdrop. This is a wonderful place to come for an unusual photo op.

Located just beside Yasaka Pagoda, Koshin-Do is one of the major touristic spots in this area. The buildings are beautifully decorated with colorful balls, on which the wish of donators is expressed. It is photogenic!

All the girls in kimonos come here to make photos for Instagram. So it’s a good spot to make some photos of them, I think lol 80% of the people were girls in a kimono when I was there.

This was an unexpected temple while strolling through the Gion district.Worshippers write their wishes on a colourful ball and then hang them at the site. The balls respresent the good faith monkeys and are in the shape of a monkey with hands and feet bound. It is on the way to the Yasaka Pagoda and close by the Kennin-ji temple.

Small Temple that’s inviting due to its colours and smart little courtyard. Worth spending five minutes here as you make your climb to Yasakanoto just a little further on.

This small temple is located just a couple of minutes across from the Hokan-ji Pagoda .
This temple represent the somewhat different Koshin faith , incorporating elements from Shintoism , Taoism and Buddhism , while dedicated to the "Three Wise Monkeys" . You may find there hung strings of monkeys puppets , with both hands and feet tied together .
You may put there your written wishes and desires (like in the wailing wall in Jerusalem).
