Neighbourhood: Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.

Visiting the geisha quarter is one of the great attractions of Kyoto. This bridge is probably one of the most beautiful and representative areas of the area, and even the Japanese use it as a background in their important ceremonies. We matched several couples of bride and groom taking pictures with ceremonial kimonos.

This is a place to go if you missed early blooming cherry blossom. We love the canal and the buildings are beautiful.

This is another favourite walk from the river/canal, and up the tree-lined alleys along the small canals. The alley is lined with old houses, ryokans and restaurants. Round the corner, there are small cafes like an-main, before you see the rather jarring sight of bars and karoakes towards the main street.

You can often see rickshaws with passengers touring the alleys, with the pullers giving a brief rundown of the place’s history.

Visited on April 6th. This is probably the busiest spot along the Gion Shirakawa River. Coming through a narrow alley from Hanamikoji, you come to this bridge, but it's so narrow and crowded with tourists trying to take pictures of the cherry blossoms, willows and wooden houses together that it's difficult to pass through. Well, to take a picture without people in it, you have to take it from above.

This small stone bridge can be found at the juncture of Shinbashi Dori and Gion Shirakawa close to the Gion Shin Bridge. The bridge is quite beautiful and affords nice views along the small river of cherry trees, willow trees and the many dark wood faced restaurants and bars set along the edge of the river.

The bridge and the nearby area is very traditional in the old Kyoto style and you will often see tourists dressed in Kimonos and makeup posing for photographs here.

Such a small bridge that spans a small canal that connects parts of Gion for completing the whole feeling of being in the (as we call it) Geisha District. It is a very photographic bridge when not crowded.

We got there in the evening as the lanterns were all illuminated and the Gion was quiet and we fell in love with the beauty around us.

We went on Christmas day at night. The bridge is gorgeous and has some lighting. It had moderate traffic for a small bridge. Its near shops and bars. Easy walk from Sanjo area.

The vermillion posts, the stone streets, the lanterns, and the people dressed in kimono make this a good shot of Gion.

This is an old stone bridge which links the Gion cross Shira river to the street. Both Night & Day cherry blossoms were so pretty. The reflections of Shira River water made the view even more uniquely pretty, remarkable and memorable. Strongly recommended anyone visited Gion to stop by here to enjoy the natural beauty anytime, day and night.
