Neighbourhood: City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.

If you want to visit a beautiful historical shrine without the crowds, this is the place to go. It's a world heritage site and it's just as beautiful as the more famous shrines in Kyoto, but you will be able to enjoy a more relaxed time here. Read up on the history of the shrine beforehand to enjoy it even more.

This was my second visit, and it was just as lovely as the last time I visited. I love that it's quiet, in a forest, and usually only really has Japanese people in it. It really is a serene and beautiful place to wander around.

Shimogamo-jinja Shrine is a serene and lovely oasis in Kyoto! Its history dates back over 2,000 years, making it one of the oldest shrines in the city. Believed to be a place of purification, the shrine holds deep spiritual significance. Surrounded by lush nature, it offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. A must-visit destination to experience the profound heritage and peaceful ambiance of ancient Kyoto.

We walked from Kawaramachi to Shimojima Jinja. It was busy because it was New Years Day so everyone was buying amulets and fortunes.

At this shrine, you can pay your respects to your zodiac sign and buy amulets, chopstick rests, etc.

I cannot believe that it took me 8 trips to Kyoto to visit Shimogamo-Jinja...it is beautiful and in such a wonderful location surrounded by tall trees and rivers on both sides. I was honestly surprised at how lovely it was. I visited towards the end of the day and had a lovely cup of tea with a wagashi (sweet) before having a good old look around with hardly anyone else there. Perfect!

This place is pretty unique for its horses. We missed a horse show when we came here, but they have horse shows on a specific day of the month. I forgot what day it is, so you will have to check it out. Besides that, they sell fortunes in small clay shaped horses. It's a nice place to visit, I wish we came when there were horses though. I got my 20th goshuin from this place.

What an event to see in Golden week. It occurs on the 3rd of May every year at this shrine.
We caught the subway to karamguchi station from kyoto on the karasume line and walked the 1.5 kms through the small streets to the shrine.
We heard it was supposed to start at 1pm but found out it was 2pm as we arrived at 12.30. We saw the rituals being performed before we walked along the 400m track to try to find a place to watch the horseback archers.
We found a spot 2 back in the crowd so get there early if you want a good view.
There are thousands of people there sitting/standing and waiting for the main event after numerous people and horses are paraded for the crowd from about 1-15pm.
Take some food something to sit on and try to get an elevated or front row spot.
Numerous archers over the 3 rounds riding along at 60 - 70 kms an hour try to shoot at 3 targets along the track over about 400 m that get smaller after each round
It was so interesting hearing the crowd cheering after every time a target is hit and replaced quickly for the next rider.
We went to Japan in golden week for this unique and extremely old traditional event and were not disappointed
